No wonder Erdogan is throwing a tantrum. Turkey's foreign policy is a shambles...

It is astonishing that there is not the faintest hint of some soul-searching in Ankara, particularly in the wake of the UN report that also found fault with Turkey. So while Erdoğan calls Israel a "spoiled child" it seems that he is actually the spoiled child, throwing tantrums when his strategies don't work out as planned, he doesn't get his will or is actually blamed for his actions.

Oh brother.. Dying empire or not, when the terrorists behold the sight of the 6th rolling in... I think Erdo might crap his pants.

Turkey has not signed the Law of the Sea convention. But it relies on it to assert a position which itself has changed over the last few weeks. At first it asserted that the RoC has no right to proceed with gas drilling without the participation of the TCs. That position might have sounded reasonable to turkophilic, mostly anglosaxon, foreigners.

In the last ten days or so Turkey asserts that it (Turkey) has rights in the gas fields in the south of Cyprus, as well as the gas fields set by Israel. This is the game changer. No island nation will accept this interpretation of the Law of the Sea, and there are many island nations which are also major powers, UK being one, Japan being another one, not to mention the really big powers that also have island territories.

As for throwing its military weight around, this is bullshit. If it came to an open conflict, Israel has no fear of a NATO reprisal, no one will invoke the principle an attack on one is an attack on all if the Israelis kick turkish ass. Secondly it would be totally foolish to attack Cyprus. It would be suicidal to attack an American company within the range of the 6th fleet.

Turkey does not have the means to be the big player it pretends to be. It has 14 frigates, Greece has 12. Any ships leaving the Aegean to patrol south of Cyprus will weaken the Aegean and Black Sea commands. As for the air force standing up to the Israelis, that is a Turkish pipe dream. The levels of equipment, training, support and experience are worlds apart.

The declared intent of escorting Ghaza relief ships or the more hare brained idea of Erdoghan travelling on those ships, will prove to the Turks that there are people around more committed to causes than they are. There is a risk that Erdo will be arrested and humiliated.

The Turks have manouvered themselves into a strange position. They reject the law of the sea they now rely on. They invoke principles selectively, as it suits them, ie partition for Cyprus but non partition for the gas. On top it all, these things have been coordinated to break out at once by the master of foreign policy Davut, the grand karaghiozis and preacher of strategic depth and zero problems with neighbors. This is the clown who engineered this mess and has caused Turkey to irritate all its neighbors, the EU, the US and Russia in one fell swoop. Some achievement, hey!

It has started.

“Homer” goes to “Aphrodite”!

The Noble Homer Ferrington drilling rig started slowly its 100 nautical miles (185 km) route from the drilling point at NOA block of Israel, towards the Cypriot drilling position in block “Aphrodite”. Noble Energy has given the green light and the moving process started yesterday afternoon by lifting its anchors with the help of the Norwegian – carrying the flag of the Bahamas – newly built special support board Skandi Saigon.

The green light was given at the end of the meeting in the Presidential Palace under the President of the Republic and the participation of Ministers of Finance, Interior and Commerce, who formally decided to begin drilling. Thus the important decision to relocate the drilling rig to “Aphrodite” was taken essentially one week before the date previously announced (September 21), and certainly well before the beginning of October which was the official date that the drilling would begin.
