Anybody been to Brussels?

Postby Sotos » Wed Aug 24, 2011 1:18 am

I am thinking to travel with Rynair to one of the few destinations they have direct flights to. I've already been to Barcelona a few years ago ... and the other destinations don't seem to be particularly great for tourists but I am still thinking to try Brussels ... has anybody been there? I've read a few things online, a few positive, some negative .. particularly the weather, but I can't make up my mind if a 3-4 day trip there would worth it.

You have to be aware that Ryan air flies to Charleroi about an hour's trip into Brussels itself, not the main airport which is only a few minutes in to town by train.

The Royal art museum is worth a look and there are a few nice streets in what is left in the old part of town around de Grot Place/Manniken Pis, and lots of eateries serving Moules. There are a few smaller museums which could also be worth a look. And yes it can rain. Might be worth two days.

I would take ALL three days in Amsterdam if I were you.

You need that much time just to visit the "Red Light" district.

If you are only going for a few days only take a cabin bag. They charge £20+ for hold luggage. Check cabin bag size on their website I think its 55x40x20 cm, max weight 10Kg. You can also avoid their £6 each way "booking" charge if you have the right card. Make sure you don't make any mistakes on your booking 'cos it costs to change it. Easyjet charged me £70 to "amend" my reservation 20 minutes after the original booking.

Kikapu it will not be convenient to stay all 3 days in Amsterdam since the plane arrives late at night in Brussels and on the day of departure it leaves at noon. Do you know if there is a fast train linking the two cities? To what other cities around Brussels I could go for a day trip? (already been to Paris). Jerry, I know about the charges. Actually they change €50 for a luggage up to 15 Kilos and €70 for up to 20 Kilos!! And I believe I read somewhere that it is €20 per kilo if your luggage weights more than 20Kg!!! Some time ago I read that they were thinking to charge a fee for using the toilet ... did they actually implement this? I know about the card also ... it is Mastercard prepaid. But I checked the websites of Cyprus banks and none of them has such card ... in any case I need to book the flights soon and I don't think I have time to get another card now.

How about a day trip to the UK. Brussels - Ashford about one and a half hours. ( Ashford is crap but only 15 minutes from Canterbury by train)
