It 'true that the Turks are planning a war against Cyprus to take possession of newly discovered oil fields off the coast of Cyprus?

Cyprus has made deals with the Israelis and the Americans .. and maybe the Russians also... and if oil is found in Cyprus then EU will receive a relatively cheap and reliable supply. Do you think Americans, Israel and EU will let Turkey go anywhere this oil? I am sure the Turks would love to steal even more of our resources ... murdering and stealing are the only two things the Turks are good at. Unfortunately for them this time Cyprus is not alone on this.

Israeli company Delek has made an offer to the RoC re the oil and gas, the three main points are:
1- Irael gets a poercentage of the oil and gas in the Cypriot field
2-CYprus gets gas at preferential rates for local consumption and power generation
3-A new gas terminal is built in Cyprus to handle the exports of gas from both the Israeli and Cypriot fields. Having a major energy terminal in the EU is self explanatory in terms of significance.

According to energy analysts this a sweet deal both financially and strategically since it will bring Cyprus reserves under the direct protection of Israel which has air and naval power sufficient to deal with any threat. It is also a sweet deal for Cyprus since the terminal, on land, is a much more valuable asset than the gas under the seabed.

To the above add the increased orders for LNG ships by Greek shipowners and the picture begins to form.

As for Turkey and its objections, at this point no one seems to give much of a stuff. It should have thought of all this when it refused to sign the Law of the Sea conventions. You cannot have it always your way.

If all goes well the RoC will be a major energy hub IN the EU. Turkey will be stuck with a bunch of pipelines bringin oil TO the EU. The difference is obvious.

Reliable sources state that Israeli drones and air force patrols are constantly monitoring the sea over the gas fields.

Erdoğan issues veiled threat over gas

The Turkish prime minister has hinted that Turkey will back Lebanon in challenging Israel's exploitation of offshore natural gas reserves.
8 September 11 22:00, Globes correspondent

Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has wound up the tension with Israel another notch, Israel's Channel 2 television news reports. After accusing Israel yesterday of failure to honor military equipment agreements, this evening he issued a threat to Jerusalem, warning that any flotilla setting out for the Gaza Strip from Turkish shores will be accompanied by Turkish naval vessels.

Erdoğan delivered the message in an interview with Al Jazeera, adding "Turkey will not allow Israel exclusive use of the resources of the Mediterranean Sea." The statement was apparently a hint that Turkey will join the front that Lebanon has opened up against Israel over exploitation of natural gas reserves discovered in the Mediterranean.

Earlier this week, Erdoğan announced the suspension of military and commercial agreements with Israel, after expelling nine Israeli diplomats.

The BBC's Jonathan Head in Istanbul says Turkey's decision to increase its naval presence in the eastern Mediterranean - and not just to deter Israeli operations against Gaza activists - is a serious one.

Turkey is protesting against the exploration of gas reserves by the government of Cyprus, because it does not recognise the area as Cypriot territorial waters.

Israel has recognised them, and hopes to source future natural gas supplies there.

This could spark a conflict that mixes the current Turkish-Israeli friction with the 50-year-old dispute over Cyprus, our correspondent says.

As usual the BBC cannot tell its arse from its face on this one.

There is no connection whatsoever between territorial waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone set out in the Law of the Sea convention. The waters of the EEZ remain free and international, it is the resources that come under the sovereignty of litoral states.

The new phrasing, not letting Israel claim exclusive control etc, shows that the whole show is for a piece of the pie to which the Turks are in no way entitled. They keep touting their 1500 kilometer coastline in the area, but that is a bullshit argument. Greece has a 16000 kilometer coastline, all of it in the eastern Med. Turkey has 8000 kilometers, one third in the Black Sea. There, in the north, it has agreed to to follow the Law of the Sea procedures for demarcation of the EEZ. In the south it wants a special deal because the law happens not to favor its interests. Typical Turkish cynicism at work. Only this time there bigger players in the game. It has gone beyond the limits of Turkey versus Cyprus. Davut the srategic genius has single handedly destroyed the goodwill his predecessors had striven to get in the USA and with its most powerful lobby.

Not to worry, he has the BBC on his side!
