Hi All,

Turkey in WW2.

In the early stages the Allies wanted TR to stay neutral as the TR army were not up to withstanding a blitzkrieg so directed aid to bolster TR's defensive ability - they did not want the Axis to have an almost open route to the Mid-East oil, part of the bargain was a TR-German non-aggression pact the allowed TR to trade Chromium for peace, although apparently TR did attempt to limit the trade as much as poss without breaking the pact. Post the Axis high water mark the Western Allies changed the aid to prep TR for a more offensive role, Stalin wanted TR to declare in 43 to draw of 10 division but the UK/US wanted TR to do so in 44 to assist in denuding the Nazi efforts in NW Europe. As it was TR declared in Feb 45.

As to the Jews many were saved by TR diplomats, many were TR national but most were descendants of TR nationals and a few others.

In answer to Kiks Q, is this propaganda, not sure but if it is then there are at least some level headed in the current TR government, that listen to the "West" asking TR to patch it up with Israel.

Director:Burak Arliel
Writers:Deniz Yesilgun, Gokhan Zincir
Stars:Albert Barbouth, Batur Belirdi and Cosma Constantin

All of them unknown with the exception of Belirdi. The language is French. Documentaries are usually financed and bought in advance by some TV channels. So most probably the guys did made a good research, had everything ready, and made the documentary after they got financed. The odds are therefore, it is a real thing financed to be used for propaganda purposes.

In politics, timing is everything sometimes and coincidental occurrences are secondary, which is why I asked the question about this documentary, "Turkish Passport", as to why it remained silent for a very long time until now, when many Jews related movies/documentaries/books in the hands of the Nazis has been already released in the last 65 years, which the movie "Schindler's List" was top amongst them.

I have access to about 10 Turkish Channels. If I come across anything interesting on the subject, I'll post it. I do try and limit how much I tune-in to these channels however, since as often the case is, they do not provide much "food for thought" programs, but rather a lot of "junk" programs in the form of "dumbing down" the population. Quality programs are hard to come by in my opinion. I think the Turks learned it from the American TV's in how do make programs that are designed to appeal to the most, to be the "lowest common denominator".

As for Schindler's List, it has been a while since I have last seen it, but the three hours will pass very quickly, since the movie will grab you all the way through it.

According to this columnist:

By MUSTAFA AKYOL

Two dark episodes from that dictatorial era are worth remembering. The first one is the Thrace Pogroms of 1934, in which some 15,000 Jews in northwestern Turkey were displaced following the hate propaganda of not just Hitler-admiring demagogues but also the Kemalist party organization that helped them.

The second episode, the infamous Wealth Tax of 1942, was even worse, for it clearly carried out an official plunder of “non-Turkish” citizens. Especially Jews and “Dönmes” (the crypto-Jewish sect that followed the doctrine of the 17th century messiah-hopeful Sabbatai Zevi) were targeted. Many among them who were unable to pay the unbelievably high “special tax” were sent to labor camps, in which some of them died.
