EU minister to act in TV series called ‘Avrupa, Avrupa’
14 August 2011, Sunday / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s European Union Affairs Minister Egemen Bağış has confirmed that he will act as a guest actor in a television series about Turkey’s EU membership process.
Bağış, speaking to reporters in İstanbul on Saturday, was asked whether news reports about his participation in a television series called “Avrupa, Avrupa” (Europe, Europe in English) were true.
“When the producers said that they wanted to stage the moment at which Turkey becomes an EU member through my own words in a series about Turkey’s EU process, which tries to explain, with humor, what kind of an EU member Turkey will be, I responded, ‘I support a project which will strengthen Turkey’s democratization process with pleasure,’” Bağış said, confirming the news reports.
The sitcom-style series will be broadcast on a channel of the state-run Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) Corporation.
In response to another question, Bağış said he will act only in one episode of the series.
When asked how he will be depicted, Bağış said, “Like the Egemen Bağış you know; I will not change.” “I am the European Union minister of Turkey. The role which friends [involved in the series] have in mind for me is making a statement about our EU process as Turkey’s EU minister,” he said.
