if its a desktop for example, or a home use printer... yes its worth it just to change the printer, or the broken component... but when it's a laptop that costs 1000 euro, and a new "component" will cost you 400... is that worth it? or is it worth it to repair it for 100, thats what i meant... because the 400 you are going to pay for the board is... well lets just say close to the amount the reseller is going to pay for it.
And the part with the oscilloscope, lets just say that now there is no more time for viewing signals to see if the chip is working properly, you have to move fast, you have to know what you are looking for, the osc is a great tool, when you have time to use it :D
and the methodology is kinda the same believe me...
If your laptop broke... what would you do? scrap it and buy another one? And i'm not talking about a hard-drive failing or your processor breaking... i'm talking about defects that need motherboard level intervention... would you be happy paying the price of another motherboard... or just paying for it to be fixed? You as a customer...

If a part fails within the warranty then it is send back to the manufacturer who sends a new replacement part. If the part fails after the warranty expires then you simply buy a new part. A video card which 2 years ago was 300 euro today doesn't worth more than 50, so even if you could fix it for 50 it wouldn't worth it. The cases that would actually worth to do such thing are very few. If you could actually do the things you claim then maybe you could find job in some of the repair centers of some companies, although even they replace the whole part usually. For example I have a friend that works for Germanos (mobiles etc), and if a part is faulty the most they do with it is to clean it and make sure that all contacts are OK etc. Beyond that they just replace the faulty part inside the mobile.

The customers returns the laptop to the shop he bought it from and the shop would return it to the authorized importer who should have a repair center. Maybe you could work in one of these centers ... BUT (1) Some of these repair centers are in Greece (or elsewhere), not Cyprus, (2) even in these repair centers they usually replace the faulty part, they don't bother to try to fix it. (in other words, most of their employees don't need any very sophisticated skills and education... just some rather basic training)

Ok so in other words tough luck finding a place where i can put my experience to any use here in Cyprus :)

Sotos the video card was an example... and besides not all video cards work flawlessly for 2 years... and not everibody likes waiting 2 months for theire equipment to come back :)
The manufacturers send replacement parts only if the part sent cant be fixed... and in some cases (especially when it comes to laptops) the "warranty" wont do anything... so your going to have to pay an amount for the repair... sometimes way more than it would cost you to repair it in a good repair center... take a look on the internet and see how many people where required to pay good money to fix theire laptop that was under "manufacturer warranty".

The thing is i've heard of so many having their laptops in computer repair shops to be fixed, they went and took their laptop in "working condition" and after 1 day, 1 week it broke down again... that means that they repair the broken mother boards... they don't change them, and they do a very poor job of it :)
So, if we talk about ancient machines... yes, they are not worth repairing... some of them... but when it comes to new machines... not all of them have warranty, not everybody can wait the maximum time period listed in the warranty to get their computer or laptop or whatever working...
I still can't believe that here in Cyprus there are no shops that do this :) or the ones that are doing this, do it o so wrong... or maybe i haven't seend the right shop yet :)

Eh anyway leaving all of this bickering behind, i just wanted to see if there are any jobs in this area... or if i should just move on to a different country :)

I would rather buy a new computer than take it to a CY repair shop.

Well... that's the thing here haven't met people working in repair shops that do a good job...
And i don't think that everybody would just rather buy a new computer when the one they have brakes down...

Franky, you are 100% right mate. In Cyprus they don't know how to repair, it is easier to replace and spend the rest of the time texting or drinking coffee.

You might consider doing repairs on the side initially until something comes up. I took my laptop to 2 stores for fixing, they just wanted me to buy a new machine!

You might like to print some CVs and drop them off at a couple of computer shops, check the cyprus weekly for english job ads and stick with it.

Should I come across an suitable jobs I email you their details.

Problem is many jobs don't get advertised but given to friends and family that why many jobs in Cy are done by incompetent peole just look at the government, government offices, airport, says it all really.

Good luck.

I had my laptop repaired twice and Its being working for more than 10 years now . If the technician its good he will do a very good job the problem is to find a good technician who knows what he is doing. If your computer get infected with a virus will you buy a new computer or to have it repaired ?

Mine was infected with a virus in the past as I did not have a good antivirus software and now I have a new hard disk upgraded with a good anti virus software .

@Mikiko Well, software problems aren't an issue... cause with viruses and os crashes... the worst thing that could happen is that you could lose your data... worst case scenario... So Mikiko if your problem was a software issue... then it doesn't count :D i was talking about hardware issues, cause software can be fixed by almost anybody.

@B25 Ya... repairs on the side i'm already doing... but i am kinda limited seeing how i don't have a lot of equipment... i just have the basic tools right now :) a soldering iron, and cds :))
I've already dropped cvs at repair shops, i've sent e-mails after e-mails, and some of the shops didn't even want my Resume :), and i think that's because at the shops your going to meet an employee and not the boss :)
