Report: Turkey second in world for counterfeit product volume

The total volume of counterfeit or pirated products in the Turkish market is worth $10.8 billion, making it the second largest in the world after China, the Cihan news agency reported on Tuesday.

A recent report published by the Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP), an initiative of the International Chamber of Commerce, has indicated that the aforementioned number does not include smuggled fuel and tobacco products, which have a total market value of approximately $10 billion. Therefore, Cihan noted, the total figure for all fake and smuggled goods stands above $20 billion.
Fake products sold in the Turkish market include foods produced with counterfeit ingredients, beverages, pharmaceuticals, electronics, auto parts and household products, as well as unauthorized copies of music, video and software.

Oh dear dear. More bad news on the Turkish Lira. At this rate, Turkey will be out of wold's largest top 20 economies much sooner than anticipated, let alone becoming top 10 by the year 2023, or even by 2030, 2040, 2050!

Lira’s woes set to continue as politics and economy mix
February 08, 2015

An embattled Turkish lira will likely continue to lose blood and devalue further against foreign currencies amid a heightened risk of volatility in monetary policy, market observers say.

The Turkish currency has lost almost 8 percent of its value against the dollar since Jan. 16 and is starting a new week with investors unable to guess what Turkish politicians' next message regarding the markets will be. The devaluation of the lira relative to the dollar has hit as high as 16 percent over the past six months amid domestic and external risks to the stability of the currency. An anticipated increase in domestic political tension ahead of parliamentary elections in June, along with regional conflicts, are among factors that will affect the lira adversely in the months to come, pundits say.

With 1 Pound you can buy something worthwhile in a pound shop and you can buy something worthwhile with 1 Dollar in a Dollar store, but you can't buy anything worthwhile with 1 lira in any shop/store.

Turkey has the luxury of priniting its own money as and when it wants. So in a sense, it doesn't really matter how good or bad the deficit is. The cheap shit just gets even cheaper as the currency plummets.

so it seems not joining the eu and having a special arrangement to trade with them was the best of both worlds. btw they do not just print more money, they just renamed it and docked 6 zeros of the exchange rate and suddenly 3 million tl for a pound became 3 ytl for a pound overnight. what a financial coup.
