Turkey's Entire Military Command Quits

Turkey's army chief-of-staff and the entire military command have resigned in a row with the government about promotions for generals held in an alleged anti-government plot, broadcasters reported Friday.

Will Erdogan be there next week?

A Military Coup is not beyond possibility:

Turkish lira, bonds weaken on military resignations

Reuters, Friday July 29 2011

(Adds details, bonds)
ISTANBUL, July 29 (Reuters) - The Turkish lira weakened and bond yields rose in the OTC market late on Friday after news channels reported that the head of the Turkish armed forces had resigned, along with the heads of the ground, naval and air forces. The lira weakened as low as to 1.6996 against the dollar from an interbank close of 1.6805 earlier.
Turkish benchmark bond yields rose to 9 percent in the OTC market from an earlier close of 8.87 percent. The reason for the resignations of General Isik Kosaner and the three forces heads was not immediately clear.
However, CNN Turk also quoted the prime minister's office as saying the generals were not resigning but going into retirement. State-run Anatolian news agency also reported Kosaner had retired.

"My sense is that this will be managed through (maybe some compromise around promotions).. with no tanks on the street... But this increases risk perceptions of Turkey and comes at a bad time given concern over the economy overheating," said RBS analyst Timothy Ash in a note.
"The lira will come under more short-term pressure but I think the central bank will step in selling dollars to hold the lira around the 1.7 level in the short term." Tensions between the military and the government of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan have been high in recent years. Erdogan has diluted the military's power since he was elected in 2002 by reforms aimed at making Turkey fit for membership of the European Union.
The Supreme Military Council was due to hold a major meeting next week to discuss key appointments and President Abdullah Gul and Erdogan met Kosaner on Friday to discuss the matter.
Friction between the government and military, which has ousted four governments since 1960, has been fuelled by an ongoing trial targeting dozens of senior military officers accused of plotting an overthrow.
"We believe the resignations are due to the dispute between the government and the military regarding the promotions of generals. We believe this may have a negative impact on the markets for Monday," said Seker Securities in a note to clients.

I think they are resigning because they are embarrassed that Erdogan did not go through with his threat to sail on a flotilla boat with the Turkish Navy in-tow this year to break the embargo on the Palestinians, imposed by Israel. The world now thinks that these Generals have chickened out to face Israel's military power head-on, when in fact, it was Erdogan who did not go through with his threat. I think the military brass has lost respect for their "commander in fright"!

Are you really all so myopic that you cannot see what is happening in Turkey?
