When the GCs were negotiating with the TCs who were desperate for an agreement, the GC leadership toyed with them all the time, because they were spoiled by the support from Europe. This went on for more than 30 years, during which the TCs started to leave TRNC and move to other countries. After 2000, especially after the refusal of the Annan plan , Turks from mainland Turkey started to flow in and invest heavily to be a part of an unrecognized EU member state, in anticipation...
That has changed things beyond repair now. The mainland Turkish population is bigger than the original TC population at this time. So how do you think a proper TC party who claims Cyprus for Cypriots will ever win an election? My sincere apologies but the GCs have no one but themselves to blame for not coming to their senses few decades ago!

In short, the roles are reversed now! Growing Turkish economy does not really need/want EU, and ever increasing Turkish population in Cyprus, who are eligible to vote, do not want to give anything back to GCs - even at the cost of no solution! Are they bothered? NO! Are they starving or lacking the comforts of any other small EU community? NO! Do they feel safer than if they joined in with the EOKA-B littered GC South? So any solution now will only come with major concessions by GCs. Else, we are all on a very long & winding road -that will give everyone long enough time to huff and puff in Cyprus-Forum

From below links and figures, it shows very clearly, that the numbers in the north started to rise very rapidly after 1972. Perhaps 1974 had something to do with it, you think.?

The link below states that, in 1996, there were 200,000 in the "trnc" and 264,000 by 2006, so if we were to interpolate the numbers between 1996 and 2006 for the north, in 2004, there would have been already 251,000 "trnc citizens", therefore, your claim that the north was flooded by the settlers from Turkey as a result of the failure of the AP in 2004 is not a correct one, is it?

Kikapu! You are talking about a census, involving the "citizens of N. Cyprus" and not TCs. First of all, many "citizens" from mainland Turkey have been on increase whilst many TCs continued to depart for distant countries, ever since 1974. The main explosion of the TRNC population is due to the breeding habits of some 40,000 mainland Turks, who are in the habit of having 5-6 children each, in contrast to an average of 2 for the TCs. Now, moving forward to Pro Annan Era, it is not the citizens that have increased abnormally in population, although issuing citizenships to mainlanders also increased, BUT it is the increase in alien workers or residents that pushed the actual population living on the island close to half a million mark. Add to that the regular amnesties that are given to such illegal workers, which are soon in a position to claim citizenship due to the length of their overall stay here, and perhaps then you can see how the picture has been changing. Putting population aside, many multinational mainland companies have opened businesses, 5 star hotels, casinos, trading companies who are very influential with the government and their policies.

There is no argument here! The GCs are no longer talking to the TCs - they are talking to the hand of PM Erdoğan. I remember warning the members of this forum, 2 years ago or so, of this fast becoming a reality, due to stubbornness and big headedness of historically misinformed GCs. Now it is all over - we have a very famous saying in Turkish language "Aza kanaat etmeyen, çoğu hiç bulmaz" - maybe you can translate that to your Greek brothers! So what happened to all the huffing and puffing? Now the leader of the alleged "illegal invader/occupier" of the island isopenly saying NO! to return of Morphou or Varosha, to any reduction of the Turkish army on the island, and even to holding any talks with EU regarding membership, if the GC side unilaterally becomes the leader of EU next term! And which mthrfckr can do anything about it

erm... I am a Cypriot - Greek or Turk does it matter. If you saw me in Ledra Street (or Oxford Street) do you think you would tell the difference? You know damn well where we really differ, but by then it would be too late

Your head has obviously been filled with one sided bad propaganda and you are yet another misinformed soul. All I can say is, rather than arguing with people on this forum to prove a point (i.e. "mine is bigger than yours" style), try researching different resources from the internet and reading both sides of the story. I am very pleased that no TC youth that I know up North feels so strongly about the GCs (and God knows they have enough reason to!). That is because they know the goings on in the history of Cyprus and are big enough not to put the blame on one party only...
