Time for the Turkish Cypriots to Break Away

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

In short at this point the Kibrislis have 3 options

a)wait for a miracle that the Kypreos would accept a lousy solution like the Anan Plan or worse as per Erdogans dreams, that would save them from the present destiny.
b)let things evolve gradually after the collapse of the talks which will result in their replacement by settlers withing MAX 10-15 years, and ALSO their losing the political power that they currently hold as soon as settlers start getting elected. or
c)Take a radical measure like establishing a side Government made up purely from Kibrisli votes.

They knew of establishing side Governments in the 60s, why not do it again? Why not ask the help and support of the United Nations this time after presenting them all the evidence? Is this really so difficult???

When the GCs were negotiating with the TCs who were desperate for an agreement, the GC leadership toyed with them all the time, because they were spoiled by the support from Europe. This went on for more than 30 years, during which the TCs started to leave TRNC and move to other countries. After 2000, especially after the refusal of the Annan plan , Turks from mainland Turkey started to flow in and invest heavily to be a part of an unrecognized EU member state, in anticipation...
That has changed things beyond repair now. The mainland Turkish population is bigger than the original TC population at this time. So how do you think a proper TC party who claims Cyprus for Cypriots will ever win an election? My sincere apologies but the GCs have no one but themselves to blame for not coming to their senses few decades ago!

In short, the roles are reversed now! Growing Turkish economy does not really need/want EU, and ever increasing Turkish population in Cyprus, who are eligible to vote, do not want to give anything back to GCs - even at the cost of no solution! Are they bothered? NO! Are they starving or lacking the comforts of any other small EU community? NO! Do they feel safer than if they joined in with the EOKA-B littered GC South? So any solution now will only come with major concessions by GCs. Else, we are all on a very long & winding road -that will give everyone long enough time to huff and puff in Cyprus-Forum

I think this topic has gone over your head. It's precisely because the T/Cs voice is no longer represented in the north that they should consider forming a shadow government that would work with the G/Cs on a federal solution. This would have the effect of sidelining and pressuring Turkey by highlighting its role as an occupying power. If Turkey can no longer validly claim it is in Cyprus to "protect" the Turkish Cypriots, then the question which arises is: why on earth is Turkey in Cyprus?

Prefer the term Provisional Government to side and shadow govs...

Believe it is the term commonly used in these situations.

... or Provisional Council ... ?

Thanks for that, Bill. I believe Provisional governments were established throughout Europe towards the end of WW2 as occupied nations were liberated from the Nazis. So the parallel is a good one.

Yes, and it was the situation in Occupied Europe in the dying days of Illegal Nazi Occupations had in mind.

Provisional Government or Provisional Council?... not sure... need to think about it.

... more important how to achieve... well it's got little to do with numbers, change isn't brought about by numbers, it's brought about by good ideas and people's hopes, by people organising and combining and by political groupings who seek power or effective says and who see the goal posts are being moved by the Occupation Regime, who see their aspirations being crushed by Erdogan's thugs on the streets of Nicosia so that any legitimate prospects of power and effective says are denied to them.

Oh dear... regrets mate... there are at least 2 refs on the home page to "own country", in an automonous state sort of way; now if they would kindly change that, then it would be a start.

Bill, I think there is some confusion in the statement. One reference is dubious where they refer to becoming a "minority in their own country" whereas the other reference to their "own country" is not necessarily to the "trnc" but to Cyprus. As in "to unite their own country as one within the European Union".

Fact is they are coming round, however slowly, to the idea that Turkey is not in Cyprus for the interests of the T/Cs. The opposite in fact: the T/Cs are an obstacle to Turkey's intention of Turkifying the north.

I've no doubt that many T/Cs wish for an autonomous T/C state. But that isn't an option - which probably explains the confusion. Realistically, it's either federation in a united state within the EU or assimilation by Turkey. It's a pretty clear choice.
