If Turkey has what she wants why is Erdogan bothering us then? Why doesn't he just bugger off and leave us alone? What does he want from the G/Cs if he has everything he wants? Just withdraw Eroglu from the UN talks, withdraw Turkey's EU application and stop wasting everyone's time.

That's because the EU (incl. Cyprus) is holding Turkiye by the balls. We have more power than we think and we should use it.
If we play our cards right with the Exclusive Economic Zone agreement with Israel & Greece, Turkey can be left outside the gas pipeline supply to Europe.

Kikapu has it right in his post. The LAST thing Turkey wants is a clear cut partition. Partition stops all further claims on the island. The TCs will have their state and the GCs theirs and Turkey will have to fuck off.

Bir claims that in five years Turkey will go federal, giving the Kurds their own autonomous federal zone with the TRNC forming another one. But that would give the south the excuse to form similar alliances with neighboring countries, which Turkey does not want.

The tantrum he threw in the north shows frustration. He is caught in the long term trap of a fixed national policy which he cannot break. Whether he likes it or not the powers that count- USA, Germany, France- have recognised the Cypriot EEZ. It is no coicnidence that both Merkel and Sarkozy visited Cyprus soon after the verification of the natural gas find in the south. Despite his threats and bombast he knows that Cyprus is in the EU and that nullifies his threats, they literally are hot air.

As for the grandiose plans to play a bigger role in the eastern Med, his dreams (actually Davut's) come into direct conflict with US long term strategy and they will not let anyone to tamper with freedom of the seas. Read US diplomat Monteagle Stearns on this unswerving US policy.

The surge in the Turkish economy is a bubble which will be severely tested in the months to come as trade falls and exports diminish. As noted above Turkey imports 99 per cent of its energy and it has no real technological base. Most export goods are made in foreign owned factories, often under foreign trade marks (ie Toyota Auris). ' Turkey has turned itself into a subsidised foreign owned (65 per cent of stocks are owned by foreigners) expedient manufacturing base. You cannot build "strategic depth" on a bubble.

In my view the EU and the British are to blame. They should just slap Turkey with economic embargoes and see how tough Erdogan will be then. The EU and the Brits are the time wasters in this situation .... end of story.

i personally hold that C****t erdo responsible for the police violence, once again he has proved that he is no leader but a nazi hellbent on causing irrepareable damage to Cyprus,if the EU have any balls then they need to show it now on Cyprus. Or am i dreaming? Is the EU able to pressure Turkey especially in now in the midst of the EU crisis?

Where did Erdogan say two separate independent states? from what we heard and read he saying two states under a BBF. He saying you have until Jan/Feb of next you year to solve this thing otherwise you can all go to hell and we will find our own solution. We will freeze the EU if the GCs are heading it as we do not recognize them nor will we accept them as our point of contact for the EU.

Now i want to see what the GCs and EU will do they have the balls to do anything? or will they pressurize the GCs to finally agree a solution?

Poor GCs have no hope,VP..The Church and fascist fanatical nationalists are still very influential in the roc and will never allow the politicians to agree to anything..Turkey has what she wants (strong influence in Cyprus) and the EU has what she wants (Turkey out)...This is the end game...Finally Erdogan feels strong enough domestically to tell the EU to go to hell...What he wanted to say all along...
I will tell you what the future holds...Turkey will have a new political presidential federal system within the next 5 years...kktc will be one of the semi-autonomous states (along with Turkish Kurdistan) in this new federation...Erdogan will be the President for life, ruling an autocratic police state...Good night and good luck to you all...

Hi Bir. Nice to have you back.

With your last 2 sentences above, don't you think they are good enough reason for the TCs in the north to embrace BBF for Cyprus with Democracy, Human Rights, International Law and the EU principles to ensure their future within the EU for a better life, or do you think they are masochist and would want to live in a police state, much like all those from the Arab states, where some who have now finally broken loose from years of oppression.? I know VP would welcome living in a police state controlled by Turkey rather than live in a Democracy with the GCs, but what about the rest of the TCs ? I also like to know why will it be the GCs fault if the TCs would choose to live in a police state under Turkey instead in a Democratic Cyprus, assuming of course, that Turkey will be able to grab the north, or even wants to from the EU in the first place, which I sincerely doubt on both accounts. Thanks.

Hi Kikapu...

I am afraid it is too late for the TCs to decide their own fate...Unless they want to pack up on mass and move to the South...Which they will not do because they still remember what it was like for them between 63-74...Nothing much has changed in the GC mentality to warrant unconditional trust necessary for such a move...

I read something online in the TC press last night which brought tears to my eyes...Someone was commenting on the police violence during Erdogan's visit..."we were once beaten up by the British, then we were beaten up by the GCs,and now we are beaten up by the Turks, our saviours...Such is the fate of the TCs..."

Rightly or wrongly, the TCs will always prefer to be beaten up by their own kind than risk humiliation by the GCs...There is nothing you and I can do about that...That is how it is,naturally, historically, collective consiousnesslly... :(

This has happened to a degree. Large numbers of Kibrisli are working and studying in the free areas. The next step is for the political parties to take them under their wing.
