Kyprianou To Resign

Kyprianou to resign...

Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou said he will ask President Demetris Christofias to relieve him of his duties “not because there is a feeling of guilt but for reasons of political sensitivity,” the Cyprus News Agency said.

It had been reported earlier today that Kyprianou intended to submit his resignation.

Speaking after a House Defence Committee meeting that discussed the blast at the Evangelos Florakis naval base that killed 13 and knocked out the island’s main power station, Kyprianou spoke of a game of impressions, scapegoats and mismanagement of public opinion.

He expressed sadness and shock for the tragedy and the mistakes and omissions that led to it and assured that he will contribute to the investigation.

Errrrr... maybe the bloke has his eye on bigger things.

Any views as to whether this resignation is a step towards a bid for the Presidency?

The story is he was being groomed for that, but as he was not ready they made Garoyian head of the party to keep Nicolas Papadopoulos out.

After this I think it might be a bit difficult for him, but in Cyprus you never know!

Possibly. Kyprianou is a smart bloke with lots of contacts in the EU and is highly regarded abroad. Don't know how permanently damaged he is by this scandal though. This certainly ups the pressure on Christofias who looks increasingly isolated...

Why do you think they originally sent him off to Brussels?
