Laiki bank and Greek problem

Postby ericroskamp » Mon Jul 18, 2011 12:56 pm

I have a 3 bank accounts at Laiki Bank. With all the financial problems in Greece and talks in different news items about possible bankruptcy when Greece decide not to accept help from the EU, what will happen with Laiki Bank in Cyprus, considering it's a Greek bank. I heard that if Greece gets bankrupt that also the banks get in problems.

Should I worry and change my bank accounts to Bank of Cyprus or another bank or there will not be any problems with Laiki Bank in Cyprus?

Anybody a good answer on this?

I also have money in Laiki and I am not going to move them anywhere. Nobody can really predict the future but losing your money is a very unlikely scenario. About how much money are we talking about? I believe the state guarantees bank deposits up to 100.000 euro. If you have more than that in one bank then just to be on the safe side you could take some of them to Bank of Cyprus.

Personally I wouldn't deposit a thin dime in Laiki bank. You all can simply give me your money and I will take good care of it for you. Nothing to worry about.

I'm a reporter with BBC Current Affairs working on a documentary about the banking problems in Cyprus and am keen to chat to people who had concerns about their accounts and what they intend to do with them now as obviously you're the most important part of this story and we're not really hearing much from the people directly affected by all of this.

This thread is a reminder of the scaremongering that was circulated about Greece some time ago.

We knew Cyprus would be next under attack, in some way.
