For this reason, we urge the public to pay serious attention to the advice given below concerning energy conservation so that we are able to reduce the number and extent of the power cuts the soonest possible.

· Τurn off all appliances from the socket. Appliances on standby mode, for example TV sets, computers, CD players, etc, continue to consume energy. The annual energy consumption due to standby mode is responsible for the emission of 600.000 tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

· Replace regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). The CFLs consume 20%-25% of the energy of a respective incandescent bulb, while they last 8-10 times more.

· Before buying an electrical appliance check its energy consumption label. Choose appliances that belong to class A or B.

· Place a solar water heater and enjoy a lower energy consumption bill of up to 40%.

· Set the thermostat of your A/C unit not less than 25C in the summertime and the thermostat of your heating unit above 22C in wintertime.

· Do not use extensively the electric heater units, as they consume a lot of energy.

· Insulate properly your windows and doors.

· Turn off the lights and air conditioning units when you do not need them.

· Clean your radiators properly and regularly.

· Use your washing machine or dish washer only when it is full.

· Use washing powder that is appropriate for washing in low temperatures and prefer the economic programs.

· Do not leave the refrigerator door open more than it is necessary.

· Defreeze your refrigerator often and adjust it at the proper temperature.

· Turn off your computer’s screen when you are away.

· Close the shutters and the curtains, so as to keep a steady temperature inside the house.

· Do not cover the radiators, as their effectiveness is decreased.

· Prefer to use the shower, rather than the bathtub. In this way you consume 3 times less electricity and water.

· Make sure that the cooking pots are placed properly on the stove.

· When you boil water, cover the cooking pot with its cover. It will boil faster and consume less energy.

· When you are away from home for a long period of time, unplug the refrigerator, empty its contents and leave its door open.

· Keep your appliances in good operating condition. For example, a central heater in good operating condition consumes less energy.
