Kurds declare democratic autonomy within Turkey’s territorial integrity

The Democratic Society Congress (DTK), a platform that brings together Kurdish non-government organizations, met and declared “democratic autonomy” within Turkey’s territorial integrity in Diyarbakır on Thursday.

Pro-Kurdish independent deputy Aysel Tuğluk told reporters in a declaration after a six-hour meeting of the DTK on Thursday that the Kurdish people declare democratic autonomy while remaining loyal to the national unity of Turkey under the country’s territorial integrity and based on democratic national principles. She also referenced international human rights documents that allowed them to do so.

Tuğluk, who is also chairwoman of the DTK, delivered a positive message regarding the centuries-long friendship of Turkish and Kurdish people in this land and warned that a continuing deadlock in the Kurdish issue will keep people in a situation of violence and conflict. The DTK’s declaration came at a time when outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members killed 13 soldiers and wounded seven others in an ambush in Diyarbakır, escalating already high-running tensions.

Tuğluk stated that the solution to the Kurdish problem could only be solved if Kurds are recognized as a nation based on equal status. The Kurdish deputy also called on the international community to recognize the democratic autonomy her congress has declared.

How can we deny the Kurds autonomy and self-rule when Turkey demands the same thing for Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus? Either we respect the territorial integrity of Cyprus or we should not complain when the Kurds demand a federal state in Turkey.

Here is my answer:

Orhan L., hoping that you are an ethnic Turk who agrees with me, let me tell you this: this is a DEFINING MOMENT in Turkish history, to use an Obama expression. If your leaders recognize it and address it with the statesmanship it deserves, Turkey will never be the same. The region will never be the same. You will kill two birds [Kurdish and Cyprus issues] with one stone and prepare the foundation for the next 100 years of the Republic. In the past I made it clear that I doubt Turkey is capable. I will be happy if proven wrong.

Viewpoint, if the same rules will apply, then yes I do. Meaning that tCypriots should have those rights within the Cypriot federation that Turkey is willing to grant the Kurds within the Turko-Kurdish federation. NOT A SINGLE RIGHT MORE!

My personal preference is an improved 1960, as per 1963. I think it would be the ideal solution for Turks and Kurds as well.

Yes I do if that is what they want.

Kurds lived in Kurdistan more than twice as long than Turks in Constantinople and Smyrne (Izmir). They definitely deserve outright independence. Kurds did not have to perform ethnic cleansing to secure a contiguous piece of land to call their own against every law in the book and against basic decency and morality.

However, their declaration speaks of autonomy, with respect to the territorial integrity of Turkey.
