Makarios "betrayed" his military masters in Greece, Denktash did not. This Halil, admitedly was not pretty, but what about Kuchuk (i know i mispelled his name, sorry) , that was not pretty either.

If one takes a critical look at Makarios's presidency one cannot reach the conclusion that he was a great President. He made fundamental errors of judgement that have cost Cyprus dearly. He never accepted that the struggle for enosis had failed and that for all intense and purposes was dead. He attempted to continue this ill fated struggle after independence. Against all odds he tried unilaterally to revise the Zurich agreements and even the Greek government failed to dissuade him otherwise. Karamanlis told him that such a move needed to be political, to be undertaken at a measured pace and that the co-operation of the Turkish Cypriots themselves was to be sought. Makarios also thought that he could use the cold war to his advantage and he started messing about with the big boys. He has great responsibility for what has happened to Cyprus, I am afraid.

Im not old enough to know Makarios but I have read and heard allot about him. He even stated in one interview that the British are not doing as they sais that they will do and he still signed over the Bases to them.

I think most of you who are the 33% are British.
