Current situation in & around Ayia Napa

Postby RonA » Wed Jul 13, 2011 6:00 pm

First of all may I express my deepest sympathies on behalf of everybody in the UK on the tragic loss of life in the last few days.

i will be arriving in Cyprus on Wednesday next, with my family & grand children staying approx 6 miles outside of Ayia Napa. Could anybody tell me how the recent tragic events are affecting the Ayai Napa area, particularly with respect to provision of electricity, water & food in the shops.

Reports about how the island life has been affected by the tragedy are very sketchy here in the UK.

There was never any issue with food. Issues with water have been resolved. There are no water cuts anywhere now. Only issue is electricity. Tourist areas receive electricity all the time, but 6 miles outside Ayia Napa is probably not considered a tourist area ... unless it is a hotel on the beach or something ... you didn't specify. If you will not be living in a tourist area then there will be 2-3 hours of electricity cuts each day. At least this is how the situation is now 2 days after the event. By that time we will have the generators from Israel, and maybe if you are lucky the generators from Greece will also come by then which would resolve the issue for the most part ... but probably it will need about 10-14 days for that to happen and you are coming in just 7 days ... so you should expect a couple of hours of electricity cuts each day. No need to worry about it .. it is tragic that 12 people died, and it is pissing off that we lost a power plant in such a way ... but beyond that life goes on as usual.

Hi Ron, welcome to CF...

We need a bit more info, as Sotos says, 6 miles outside Agia Napa may not be classed as a tourist area.

Give us the name of the locality/village/hotel where you'll be staying.

Hi Many thanks to all who replied.

I know it may appear selfish in the view of such tragic losses to be worried about such such trivia & for myself such minor deprivations doesn't worry me, but my concern is for my grandchildren, two of whom are aged about 1 years old.

We will be staying in Ayai Thekla will we be subject to power & water cuts? The query about food was born on the grounds that lack of power usually spells lack of refigeration.

It's a diff time for all CYs and all of CY Ron, such a small place that everyone is effected by such a tragedy.

... but life goes on.

Stayed a few times in Agia Thekla, regretfully it's a pretty non-descript linear development of "villas" along the coast road, but being within a few hundred yards of the sea, there's always a good breeze to cool things down but it can get a bit humid. Off the main road it's a very quiet place.

It has got a supermarket and a bar just down a cul-de-sac about half way down the main road and you'll find one of those invaluable potable water dispensing machines there as well for which you will need a good-sized water container.

The great attraction is the local quiet beach with a cafe. It really is a gem of a beach. There are however loads of slippery rocks under the water for the first few yards 'til you find a sandy bottom so do have a care with the kids. It's very shallow between the beach and a tiny island fifty yards off-shore. There are beach showers there if you find you've run out of water at home for showering.

Pretty sure it's outside the tourist area so expect the power cuts and take torches etc.

Will message a friend there to see if there is more info for you.

There are no water cuts anywhere. No problems with food. Just electricity cuts for about 2 hours each day. By that time electricity cuts might be less.

Thank you to both Sotos & Bill,
The information you have provided has considerably eased my mind. I hope for all your sakes the situation rapidly gets back to normal, sadly for those directly involved that can never be the case.

The reports of how the tragedy occurred over here seem to imply the containers containing the seized arms where caught up in a brush/undergrowth fire, is that how its being explained over in Cyprus?

That was some initial report that was not true. There was no brush/undergrowth fire. The fire started from inside one of the containers. The contents of the containers went bad because they were stored improperly for 3 years :(

Was down in the Ayia Napa area this morning where there was a power cut. There was a lot of looting going on and the Police were out with their machine guns trying to protect the shops! Sorry that was a dream, the police were trying to protect the Government!
