Turkey Threatens to Freeze EU Ties Over Cyprus

Postby Hermes » Wed Jul 13, 2011 5:11 pm

Turkey not at all happy about Cyprus' forthcoming EU Presidency...

‘EU ties to be frozen if Greek Cyprus assumes presidency before solution’

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Wednesday that Turkey would freeze relations with the European Union if the Greek Cypriots continue to delay negotiations and assume the EU presidency before the parties reach a solution on the divided island of Cyprus.

Davutoğlu underscored that Turkey cannot accept the union as an interlocutor under the presidency of Cyprus in such a situation. “I openly told this to [European Commissioner for Enlargement] Stefan Füle as well. We do not think that relations between the EU and Turkey can be maintained under the term presidency of southern Cyprus without a solution [to the Cyprus issue],” Davutoğlu said during a joint press conference he held with Ukrainian FM Konstantin Grischenko in Ankara.

Ankara's goal is reaching a swift solution on Cyprus and Greek and Turkish Cypriots jointly assuming the upcoming EU term presidency in July 2012, the minister said. “If this does not happen, and if the Greek Cypriot side takes over the term presidency unilaterally on July 12 via delaying negotiations, this does not mean only non-settlement; it also means a freezing point beyond the stagnation in relations between Turkey and the EU,” Davutoğlu said. An immediate response came from Füle, who said he believes “it is not a good time to make such comments” on the Cyprus issue.

The six-month-long rotating presidency of the 27-member bloc will be held by Denmark in the first half of 2012 and by Greek Cyprus in the second half of the year. The upcoming Greek Cypriot rotating presidency makes resolution of the Cyprus issue more and more urgent and vital for Ankara since it doesn't recognize the southern Cyprus Greek administration on the divided island as the representative of the entire island.

It sounds like a threat from Turkey to abandon the Customs Union, Ah well, I'm sure other countries are queuing up for Turkish exports that the EU will no longer accept.

If Turkey wants a quick solution to the Cyprus problem it should adhere to UN resolutions and abandon its victimisation of Greek Cypriots.

France and other EU countries will be so satisfied from this that will propose for Cyprus to hold the presidency permanently :D The Turks have delayed the implementation of resolution 353 for 37 years. If they want a solution by 2012 then they should stop illegally occupying Cyprus and remove their troops from our country.

RESOLUTION 353 (1974)

Adopted by the Security Council at its 1771st meeting,
on 20 July 1974

The Security Council,

Having considered the report of the Secretary-General, at its 1779th meeting, about the recent developments in Cyprus,

Having heard the statement of the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the statements of the representatives of Cyprus, Turkey, Greece and other Member States,

Noting also from the report the conditions prevailing in the island,

Deeply deploring the outbreak of violence and the continuing bloodshed,

Gravely concerned about the situation which has led to a serious threat to international peace and security, and which has created a most explosive situation in the whole Eastern Mediterranean area,

Equally concerned about the necessity to restore the constitutional structure of the Republic of Cyprus, established and guaranteed by international agreements,

Conscious of its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in accordance with Article 24 of the Charter of the United Nations,

1.Calls upon all States to respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus.

2.Calls upon all parties to the present fighting as a first step to cease all firing and requests all States to exercise the utmost restraint and to refrain from any action which might further aggravate the situation;

3.Demands an immediate end to foreign military intervention in the Republic of Cyprus that is in contravention of the provisions of paragraph 1 above;

4. Requests the withdrawal without delay from the Republic of Cyprus of foreign military personnel present otherwise than under the authority of international agreements, including those whose withdrawal was requested by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, in his letter of 2 July 1974;

5. Calls upon Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to enter into negotiations without delay for the restoration of peace in the area and constitutional government of Cyprus and to keep the Secretary-General informed;

6. Calls upon all parties to co-operate fully with the United Nations Peace-keeping Force in Cyprus to enable it to carry out its mandate;

7. Decides to keep the situation under constant review and asks the Secretary-General to report as appropriate with a view to adopting further measures in order to ensure that peaceful conditions are restored as soon as possible.

Adopted unanimously at the 1781st meeting.

Just where do you people find all these jokes for gods sake?

I am having a good laugh at this, are these people for real. They are the illegal occupiers, UN resolution violators, hold the key to any settlement and they now have grown balls to threaten the EU.

Well, boys and girls, this has to be the joke of the centuary, what would be funnier, not, is if our current, for the moment anyway, spineless president actually accepted much less just to satisfy this threat.

Given a threat ike this, I would be calling their bluff. For as long as there are:

1. Turkish troops station here
2. Illegal settler gypsies here
3. And non return of refugee properties, both ways.

Then the turks can go whistle and we will hold out for those demands.

I think its a case of check and mate!

Turkey is doing a Poker Bluff by going "ALL IN" with a pair of deuces, in the hopes of scaring others away with much higher hands, so that she can win the pot with nothing. The problem is, other players know that Turkey is only holding pair of useless deuces, therefore, she will be called upon by others immediately.

In American Football terms, Turkey is throwing a "Hail Mary" pass, in the dying seconds of the game, in the hopes that someone will catch the ball, make a score, and win. Such desperate play attempts are 1 in a 1000 successful. Good luck, Turkey!

I don't really get the nature of this threat. It's a bit like saying "if you don't give me what I want, I'm going to take a gun and shoot myself in the leg. That'll teach you to mess around with me."

As others have pointed out, Turkey can have a solution tomorrow if it wants. All this bluster about deadlines and frozen ties is just Turkey realising its Cyprus strategy has reached a dead-end.

the funny thing is the t/c get hurt again,if turkey truly cared about the t/c she would have agreed to a geniune federation were the t/c would have more powers than any other minority in the world but turkey only cares to control the whole island for her own benefit not for the t/c or g/c.
