Its the whole system that needs to go first . If it was decentrailsed meaning each dept in the government taking its own decsions and not expecting the president to take such a minor decision about storage of the cargo then such events may had been avoidable . The rsponisbility lies on the related Ministries in my view and and the poisonous attitude that exist among them . Only If anyone has worked there will know how beaurocracy works where everything expects aproval for someone else with no responisbility .

I dont say that there is no responisbility among the President and the wrong assessment that he has taken but If he resigned tomorrow do you tink the system will be working perfectly .??????????

Condolenses to the people affected !

Are the Syrians kindly going to stop the illegal ferry service to the "TRNC" now that we have shown we are willing to blow ourselves up to keep them happy?

It's one thing for Christofias to balance foreign interests, it's another to risk blowing up a chunk of the island because the President is caught between his ideological prejudices and doing the right thing.

As the son of the base's dead commander told the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation. "We had our soldiers guarding explosives of the Syrians. Are we serious?"

Storing volatile explosives in such an area was dangerous and stupid, Christofias should take responsibility for this government's indecision and stupidity.

I couldn't agree more ... well articulated.

As for whether the president should go the answer is a big YES. In fact the village idiot should have never been elected to start with! We are paying the price for this big mistake daily. Things will not get better until he resigns.

Did you apply for citizenship during these 20 years? I don't know if you were referring to me but I never questioned the responsibility of the government or the president. I also think he should resign ;) But those that do not like our culture should simply piss off. I am not going to sit here and take insults about our culture from any bizzybabe. Who elects the president of Cyprus are the Cypriots and that is just a fact. If you want to have a say on this then get a citizenship!

Surely it's not about Cypriot culture, it's about Cypriot politics and in this case one politician. So, by your curious logic, supporters of a party that loses a general election should piss off too.

I was offered citizenship of the ROC but declined, am I allowed to insult the president?

Just who came and offered it to you Jerry, the president. You don't get offered anything without an application.

If you had applied, then you wanted it. Unless there is more to this than I can see???????

Back in the 60s every time I visited Cyprus I was told that I should apply for an exit permit "to avoid confusion/delays at the aiport". On more than one occasion I was told that I could apply for citizenship since my father was born in Cyprus. As citizenship would have been granted I interpret that that as meaning it was offered. I decided not to apply as it was fairly clear to me that no more exit permits would have been issued until I had served in the NG. Since I understood very little Greek and was resident in the UK I didn't think serving in the NG was a good idea especially later when I had my own family and business in the UK.

Read the initial post. It was all about insulting Cyprus and our culture. If you want to insult the president go ahead. But can you have a say about who the president should be? No you don't. Or rather you can have a say that counts for nothing. That is just a fact ;)

Sotos, I don't think your single vote has much say in who the President should be although I guess you may be able to influence him if he was your cousin.

Here's a free and gratuitous insult to Cypriot culture for you to ponder. "The Cypriot practice of not wearing seatbelts or crash helmets is because they are too stupid to accept the fact that accidents don't only happen to other people"

PS. The Government of the ROC also apply this principle to the storage of explosives.

Personally I always wear my seatbelt and everybody I know also always wears a seatbelt. So how is this a Cypriot practice? And how is this related with the topic anyways??? After all if you don't wear your seatbelt or your helmet and you get killed ... well, that is your life you do what you want with it. How is this any difference than doing extreme sports or going to the top of the Everest? Some people would say that such things are stupid. Other people like to take risks. This has nothing to do with our topic here! Obviously the government is at fault but it was an accident. Like the Japanese who have the most earthquake pron country and they are full of nuclear plants! The accident had to happen for the Japanese and many others to realize the risks even though it should have been obvious!

I was not going to reply on this until .... yeah the one in Japan was an accident, it was a 10 degree earthquake, no one in Japan has a say about this, but this thing in Cyprus, yeah well, I will take in 2000 tons of explosives and leave it out there in the sun for 2 years, and yep, it's not my fault, and it's an accident...

For real??? you are comparing these two??? risk????
