I dread to think of the consequences if more than two barrels had exploded. We might have blown up the entire island.

I'd like to know whether the authorities had a plan to dispose of the munitions dump or if their only plan was simply to leave 98 barrels of high explosive sitting out in the Sun for as long as possible...

Not sure we can describe them as "barrels" file... have heard them described as "containers" by which believe is meant those huge 40' shipping containers.... ??????

There were 92 containers (those that are used by ships) full with explosives and all of them exploded. I think I heard somewhere about 2 kilotons of explosives. I live more than 10 Kilometers from where the explosion happened and it shook the windows of my home! In the begging I thought it was an earthquake!

Thanks for the correction. Apparently the whole lot went up. As a result, the Defence Minister and Army Chief have both resigned. I'm not bloody surprised.

It seems to be the tragic consequence of a poorly planned effort to save political face. My condolences, Cyprus ... very sad.

How far reaching are the ramifications? My brother and his young family are in flight to CY. They'll be staying in Pissouri. I'd like to put him on notice. If anyone can provide info., it would be appreciated.

Yes... tragic loss of life, including hear five exceptionally brave fire-fighters who were attempting to avert the catastrophe, condolences to friends and families of those who have lost their lives.

Ramifications...? The major one will be power cuts for months. Hear the desal plants have been shut down to conserve electricity, but fortunately it's been a wet winter, so the reservoirs will be pretty full... as long as there's electricity to run the water-work system.

Sorry folks...Just reading that water cuts have already started in Larnaca.

Thank you, Bill Cobbett; however I wasn't very clear in my request. I meant more immediate ramifications as they would apply to my brother's situation, i.e. flying into Larnaca tomorrow and travelling directly to Pissouri: delays, cancellations, traffic detours, etc., By far-reaching, I meant in terms of distance.

Oh... all can add is that LCA is running and looking at the arrivals ... all seems to be running as normal...

Maybe others can tell us about the conditions on the Highways.
