How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Reflections .....

Postby humanist » Sun Jul 10, 2011 3:28 am

I have been reflecting on the demonstrations in the occupied area of Cyprus, and kinda thinking is it really about the economic measures that Turkey has taken or is it really about TC community feeling the Turkish dictatorship?

What do you think?

I have also been thinking about what if the Republic offered financial assistance for those TC's who return to their homes in the Free area and if the homes have been demolished for what ever reason that houses are built for these misplaced people. How many of those will return?

What do you think?

I have also been reflecting on the last referendum in relation to unification where the majority of TC's had voted YES. Was the vote about the actual AP itself and its contents or whether infact they are over living like the poor cousin in their Country by being out numbered by Turks in their own Country?

What do you think?

I have also been wondering what the legal implications may be for the Great RoC ;) should a significant number of TC's living in the occupied area (North) who were originally from there, formally request the RoC to take their plight from the Turkish Occupier to the UN and the EU? What then? These are citizens of the RoC recognised so. They feel the pain that the Turkish occupation has caused to their daily lives and request assistance from the RoC for their freedoms?

What do you think?

The short answers are:
[a] a good number of tCs are afraid to stand up to Turkey. I too would be afraid.
[b] a good number of tCs feel they are stuck between a rock and a hard place
[c] the 'yes' to AP was in reality a 'no' to the 'status quo'
[d] the 'yes' to AP was largely influenced by the guided vote of the illegals
[e] the RoC cannot/should not give tCs the super rights of 1960
[f] the RoC can/should help tCs as individuals, not as members of the 1960 tC community
[g] tCs need a new leadership free of the bonds of the occupier

The long answers can be found by browsing my blog. Here is an interesting exchange on the Cyprus Mail some time ago ("SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2011 - Checkmating fascism in Cyprus!"): http://antifon.blogspot.com/2011/02/che ... yprus.html

Its the money in their pockets....they will exploit every avenue to make sure they are not forced to cut back or work harder.

I have also been thinking about what if the Republic offered financial assistance for those TC's who return to their homes in the Free area and if the homes have been demolished for what ever reason that houses are built for these misplaced people. How many of those will return?

They would never return just sell up and take the money, no one wants to live in a GC state.

They voted thinking that it was time to conclude this matter and it was the best deal they would ever get.

Most Cypriots and foreigners alike agree with the above!

Yes they do, more so than you.

He has a very valid point, when you afford the same rights to the Kurds that you demand here, then you can speak, otherwise STFU.

Absolutely AF makes the very valid point ... and is quite right to remind us time and time again... and let's bear in mind the tens of thousands of Kurds who have lost their lives at the hands of the terrorist Turkish Army, the thousands who have been imprisoned including some who just wanted to speak their own language, who don't want their ethnic identity swamped by Isamist Turkishness.

There is only one solution for the Turkish/Kurd problem.... and that's a BBF for Turkey/Kurdistan, with equality between the two constituent states.

... oh and make that a Confederation.

As a TC who has lived most his Life in the UK but has also spent many years in the occupied areas and am currently residing their -

A-) The majority of TC's are genuinely sick and tired of Turkeys occupation but the majority within that majority are too afraid to stand up unlike a number of unions and the so called ' fringe left wing parties'. The most important thing that I got from the march was a sense that the cuts were one component of a much larger plan . Also there were many people there who would be considered apolitical carrying banners that did not mention the cuts rather anti ankara imperial slogans, these are the silent majority. My 60 year old aunties who are totally apolitical marched and the cuts will not effect her directly.

B) I have met and continue to meet so many TC's who would be regarded as apolitical but have told me they cant stand Turkeys prescence but are too afraid to speak up or march especially with the unions and left parties for instance. However, a number of these TC's are also afraid of GC domination, again this fits into the notion of stuck betwen a rock and a hard place. And belive you me, that feeling is very much the current mode of thinking.

c) The Annan plan, i was there at the time and spent many weeks their before and after gave me the impression that TC's just wanted to end the staus quo,

d) Only a very few TC's would consider moving south if any, in general TC's are not convinced of thier security within a GC dominated south and North for that matter. Although both leaderships a lot to answer for this feeling of insecurity.

E) Yes TC's need new leadership so desperately that stands up to Turkey.

Thank you B25 and Bill Cobbett.
The fact is Turks & some tCypriots can't fathom the validity of the comparison.

Let us remind them time and time again that the solution in Cyprus will form the basis of the solution in Turkey itself. For it will.
That is why we Cypriots best make it a good one, fair to the minority but certainly fair for the majority as well.

And let's remind Turks that even with a Cyprus free of its problem we, tCypriots and gCypriots alike, will never forget the plight of the gigantic minority community of Turkey still fighting to secure its most basic of democratic rights.

Jahitty, no questions about the rock. The hard place though is not as hard as tCypriots have been propagandized to believe. At the end of the day if tCypriots are Cypriots first, which they are, they owe to themselves to bet on the Cypriot horse (well, donkey!). Cypriots must defend Cyprus with every fiber of their being. The enemy is the rock, its army and ultra-conservative outlook on life! We belong in the west and we have no hesitations about it.

A leap of faith is needed. A tCypriot leader is needed to make it on your behalf.

tCypriots have a rare opportunity to make an authentic mega contribution to Cypriotness! I guarantee you that the tCypriot leader who can eloquently express the will to meet gCypriots half way [I personally see an improved 1960 in terms of sharing and balance of power as the most logical way forward] will be revered by all Cypriots for at least the next 10 generations. Cypriots can make Cyprus a beacon of prosperity and true democracy in the region for we understand the western ideals deep within. It won't happen with a basis/thinking that builds on the ill-designed features of the 1960 structure.

I have zero doubt in my mind that tCypriots are genuine Cypriots! The way you think, the way you express, the way you laugh, the way you dress, the way you believe, the way you dream for your children, the way you love Cyprus. But how long can you allow your "leaders" to go on with the charade on a stolen theater. How much longer do you really have before making a decision? I am afraid inaction won't cut it this time around unless you wish for gCypriots to keep it all.
