Eroglu, Demetris Christofias and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in Geneva. The meeting which took place at the UN Headquarters in Geneva lasted for more than 4 hours. A proposed meeting before the tripartite meeting aimed at finalizing and concluding the police issue was cancelled after the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias failed to respond to the proposal............

EROGLU-HOTEL CRISIS ............

The TRNC negotiating team experienced a minor crisis in Geneva ahead of today’s summit meeting. President Eroglu was forced to change the hotel he was staying in Geneva after it refused to fly the TRNC flag despite an earlier agreement with the hotel to do so.
The TRNC President who was initially staying at the Intercontinental moved to the Hilton hotel.

The UN Secretary General was also staying at the same hotel.

The President and his accompanying delegation left the hotel around noon yesterday after the hotel management, despite promising, delayed the hoisting of the flag, creating problems.

The TRNC flag was hoisted at the entrance of the new hotel.

Eroğlu had stayed at the Intercontinental the last time he was in Geneva which was for the previous tripartite meeting held in January. The hotel had hoisted the TRNC flag during that stay.

Leaders agree to meet U.N. chief in October.......

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
--
PRESS REMARKS FOLLOWING THE SECRETARY-GENERAL’S MEETING WITH THE GREEK CYPRIOT AND TURKISH CYPRIOT LEADERS
Geneva, 7 July 2011

Good afternoon,

I would once again like to thank Their Excellencies, Mr. Christofias and Mr. Eroglu, for accepting my request that they join me in Geneva today.

This has been our third meeting together. As you will recall, we met in New York in November 2010 and then again in Geneva in January of this year.

I also spoke with Mr. Christofias and Mr. Eroglu in April when we decided it was best to take a little more time to advance the negotiations towards a comprehensive settlement before we met again.

Both sides have worked steadily to take the negotiations forward since our meeting in January, but progress has been far too slow.

Some important areas have remained untouched. For this reason, today’s meeting has been useful and productive.

We have identified some of the difficulties that are standing in the way of reaching a comprehensive agreement, and we have discussed the need to significantly intensify the negotiations.

I have also raised with both the leaders the importance of looking ahead at the objective rather than focusing on the problem in minute detail.

The atmosphere today was quite positive. I was impressed with the commitment of both sides to agree on the details to create a united Cyprus.

Both leaders have made it clear that they are aiming to reach a comprehensive solution as soon as possible.

I stated to Mr. Christofias and Mr. Eroglu that while I agreed that the negotiations must be Cypriot-led and Cypriot-owned, I was prepared to offer an enhanced United Nations involvement, without prejudice to this central principle.

I am happy to report that both leaders have accepted my offer.

I also took the opportunity to remind both leaders of the parameters of the agreement that we are striving to reach as set out in relevant Security Council Resolutions.

The leaders have agreed to enter into an intensive period of negotiations on the core issues when they return to the island.

They will focus on finding a way through the difficult core issues.

I have every expectation that by October the leaders will be able to report that they have reached convergence on all core issues, and we will meet that month in New York.

This will take the Cyprus negotiations close to their conclusion and would allow me to give a positive report to the Security Council on the matter.

It would also pave the way for me to work with the parties towards convening a final, international conference.

I am also pleased to report that the leaders have agreed that they must begin to build support for a comprehensive agreement.

On both sides the public has become weary. Both leaders must renew hope and enthusiasm for a solution.

They have acknowledged the need to begin to prepare their respective communities for the compromises required for a settlement and the prospect of living together in a united Cyprus.

Thank you.

This is a friggin joke. Security Council Resolutions WTF, Where are these resolutions that the Turks have failed to honour??? Where is the UN in enforcing these violations? Why the hell do you refer to these, so called, resolutions, when you pick and chose which ones to honour or not? This is totally farcicle, the UN is a waste of corrupted spce.

UN, no one trusts you any more to do an honourable, decent, truthfull job. F.O.

An understandable and very justified reaction file...

... but another part of the statement that catches my attention is the last sentence in Bonky Moon's speech...

"...They have acknowledged the need to begin to prepare their respective communities for the compromises required for a settlement and the prospect of living together in a united Cyprus...."

So Two Separate Countries Nationalist Spokesperson for the Settlers Sod Reunion Errorgluey is gonna have a lot of trouble with meeting that, given that for months and at every opportunity his public statements have talked up expectations in his fellow partitionists and shown bugger all empathy with the other CYs. Contrast that to Pres X who, whether we like it or not, has time and time again said that there will be painful compromises and reaches out to the other CYs.

Errorgluey's gonna have a hard time with meeting Bonky Moon's wish. Fear more likely he'll revert to type, to the nationalist and generally unhelpful approach he's always had... winding down the clock to an international conference.

Well, they've clearly both been told to cut out the rhetoric.... hence the cancellation of press conferences.

... but it is big VP... cos they've also been told settlement by October, and the UN will be a bit more pro-active.

Nah! there's a bit more here.

Associated Press, Published: July 7
GENEVA — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday he expects Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to reach agreement by October over the future of the divided island of Cyprus.
Ban emerged from a half-day of talks with Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to say they had agreed to intensify their slow-moving talks.
“I have every expectation that by October the leaders will be able to report that they have reached convergence on all core issues, and we will meet that month in New York,” Ban said.

full report:-

Best thing the UN can do before October is to accurately determine how much land each side owned in 1974. Banky is showing his bias already by refusing to refer to Christophias as the President of ROC.
