GENEVA — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday he expects Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to reach agreement by October over the future of the divided island of Cyprus.
Ban emerged from a half-day of talks with Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to say they had agreed to intensify their slow-moving talks.
“I have every expectation that by October the leaders will be able to report that they have reached convergence on all core issues, and we will meet that month in New York,” Ban said.

Best thing the UN can do before October is to accurately determine how much land each side owned in 1974. Banky is showing his bias already by refusing to refer to Christophias as the President of ROC.

I don't think so, Jerry. He is just trying to be diplomatic to facilitate a settlement by not making Eroglu have a inferiority complex next to Christofias during these meetings.

Why "inferiority complex" and not sound diplomatic judgement as they both come to the negotiating tables as leaders of their respective communities.

One is recognised as President of a lawful regime by the UN the other is simply, as you say, leader of his community 'cos the "state" he represents does not, in the eyes of the UN, exist.

Ban Ki-moon probably heard what happened at the Intercontinental Hotel over their refusal to fly the "trnc" flag which Eroglu probably said to the manager, "unless you put the flag up we will be leaving this hotel", in which the hotel manager probably said, "don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out", therefore, Ban Ki-moon didn't what to have to deal with another threat of Eroglu leaving the meeting by demanding to be called a "President". A little diplomacy can go a long way sometimes, even if one doesn't agree with the situation.

Yes and we all know how important the land proportions are. Indeed if we were to pick one and only one settlement point... it would be the headline figure territory one, wouldn't it?

(Hear reports, by the way, that there is debate on a third zone, one comprising the Karpas, under some kind of joint authority, so we may be heading towards a multi-zonal settlement)

That would be a leftover proposal made in the Annan plan to make Karpaz a Federal land under Federal control. A bit like Washington DC in a way, since it is also not counted as a state.
