Travel to London

Postby johbee » Thu Jun 30, 2011 9:21 am

Okay so I'm stopping in London with the wife and kids for a few days on my way across the pond. I haven't been for over 20 years so was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what to do and where to stay? Tea with the Queenie? (I'll have mine with ice please.) Polo with Charles? Heard they have a good wax museum and something called the British Museum where they keep all the stolen artifacts. Any other recommendations, especially a good area or hotel to stay in???

I am thinking to go to London also this summer. The only thing that worries me is the weather!

You could buy all your electrical appliances with 3 pin plugs!

The Good news is I am going to the UK this weekend with the wife and kids. The even better news is that we will be back in two weeks. Electrical appliances are not on the shopping list as I can change a plug.

I cannot suggest accomadation - we are stopping with family.

Chepest way to get around is a cheap day travel card - GPB 6.50 for Zone 1 and 2 (most of Central London) Valid also on buses, just a bit more for all Zones card. With singes on the underground at 4 QUID- YES - 4 QUID - they are a bargain.

Things to do/see - depends on age and interest of the Kids - just keep females out of Oxford Steet/Bond Street/Regent Street - tooooo many clothes shops!

Otherwise things to see: the Museums in South Ken, eg Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert, all a short walk from South Ken underground.
From the Science museum it is only a short stroll up to Hyde Park: if you are feeling really fit from there you cam walk past Hyde Park Corner and Apsley House (home of the Duke of boot ) in to Green Park (the Original Hard Rock Cafe is nearby ) to Buck House (for your tea with the Queen?) , and then either through St Jame's Park down to that place featured on a sauce bottle or Westminster Abbey, or down the Mall past Horseguard parade and Admiralty Arch to Trafalger Square.

London Eye (Round and Round went the great big wheel, in an out went ...)., and London Aquarium.

Covent Garden and London Transport Museum . Good for kids/

What else? Oh sod it just buy a guide book...,..

Enjoy anyway.

Dont forget to bring your bank account with you as they will rip you off wherever you go . And If you consider even accomodation then you need to bring your wife account also.

How didn't I think of it before? Every time I need to buy an appliance all I need to do is to travel to UK! Maybe you can also suggest some luggage that would fit a 60" TV?

So I guess you would never go to a restaurant because you can cook and you never drive a car because you can walk. What if you had to cook yourself and still pay restaurant price? Maybe you and CBBB are suckers but I don't like to waste my time with things I shouldn't need to ;)

Is it more expensive than Paris? I went to Paris a few years ago and I didn't think it was too expensive.

I ve never been to Paris so I can not comment Only to South France Toulouse but spent few days . But I have been to London many times and as long as you have cash people smile and are gentlemen otherwise they will treat you like a piece of shit ! ahhh And they are always busy trying to catch the next train ..

It depends where you stay what you will buy etc . Not all goods are electrical . But as sterling is so weak at the moment compared to euro then you may not find too expensive and may be good for shopping around.

Thanks Mikiko for the useful information. Kids are 10,13, & 14, We won't be doing much shopping there since we will be moving on to the US after our short stay in London. I have found some apartments for around 200 Sterling per night which seems to be not too expensive. Surely London can't be as expensive as Limassol! As for the three pin plugs I agree with you Sotos. A huge pain ion the a$$!!!

Woo woo.....chill man, chill

Just enjoy your trip to London, and enjoy Cyprus all the more as a result when you come back. Don't worry too much about the weather - there are lots of wet weather possibilioties such as the Museums, Art galleries, great Churches, etc.,
