If theres any Cypriots out there who don't believe that good service, good prices and customer care don't matter, then just check out trip advisor. Your'll find Cyprus is littered with the same stories over and over again. Cypriot vendors who ripped off the tourist and treated them like trash.

I think SKI-preo was being sarcastic ;) Cyprus has its problems but it is not as bad as some other places. If you are not very careful you can be literally robed in some places. A friend of mine recently went to Spain and her bag was stolen while she was eating at some fast food place. The thief took her money, mobile, camera and other personal items. I am not saying such things never happen to Cyprus but for sure they happen far less often than many other popular tourist destinations.

Well, imho, both S and SP make valid, but unrelated points.

Tourism is a service business, and there are too many stories from visitors who have had a bad experience, but let's keep in mind that most visitors have a good experience, so much so that many return year after year... but CY has to work on this service, to keep up with the level of service in the competition in other parts of the world and try to get the bad experiences down to a minimum. There is def work to do.

On the matter of crime, always have had no fear of crime in CY... often leave doors and windows open at night without a second thought (don't like air-con outside shops and banks and if wanted to experience cool would stay in GB).

... but back to sun-beds.... Sometimes on hols, it's great to relax all day on those beds and brollies, but if we're only on the beach for an hour or two will take our deck-chairs and brollies, which as all will know are very good value in CY, and we will find a beach or a space on the beach away from the sun-bed area cos the chap who lets out the sunbed will have paid a very hefty price to the local municipality to run his business. Am saying use a little bit of common sense, find a quiet bit of beach away from the sun-bed areas and let the sun-bed man earn a living.

... can also say... if am relaxing on one of those sun-beds, please don't come and throw a towel on the beach and sprawl out next to me... unless you're reasonably young, female and wearing a skimpy bikini or less. Thank You.

Also, it is good for tourists that Cyprus has a lot of organized beaches. For the Cypriots and permanent residents it might be ok to carry with you to the beach your own sunbed, umbrella etc but for a tourist is much better to just go to the beach, pay a couple of euro and get a sunbed, umbrella and also have available refreshments nearby.

...Because its not like their would stop coming to Cyprus is it? (!) Theres no way they would return home and tell everyone they know what a rip off Cyprus is (!) And theres no way their friends would decide on that basis not to come to Cyprus themselves(!)

Cyprus does not want cheap skates Madam, go to your local public swimming pool if you can't afford a holiday and take your poor friends.Maybe you can save more money buy jumping the fence.

Problem is Bill is that there are no beaches left. One of the few beaches in Limassol that was unaccosted and we regularly went too has now been taken over by the Dizzy Bizzy Cafe. He has built two kiosk and filled the beach up to the sea with chairs. You can't even walk past. He's charging five Euros for the chairs and umbrellas. Word on the street is that this mug applied for permission, was denied, and did it anyway. As for this man making a living, I suppose he does have to support the numerous super cars he regularly displays outside his cafe.

Threre are some "secret" beaches but you have to drive a bit out of the city to find them. I've been to one such beach today. It is a nice sandy beach and we were alone there :)

Yes, suspect two things...

Think this chap has gone above the max price that CTO imposes. Can't remember what the legal price ceiling is, but 5E does seem above it.

Also think that this chap and many others go beyond the geographic limits of their pitches. They have paid a rent to the local municipality and am pretty sure the contract will specify limits/number of beds etc.

Consumers and concerned users of beaches need to check with local council records and the CTO to keep prices and pitches within limits.
