I wrote to Ed Milliband (and others) about the Cyprus problem highlighting the illegal colonisation of the island by Turkey. Some of the replies I received ignored my question and offered the usual platitudes about supporting the UN etc. This reply from one of Ed's helpers, however, made specific reference to demographic changes to Cyprus. I think a few dozen more letters/e-mails to Ed & Co could just bring this aspect of the Cyprus problem to the attention of UK Parliament/Government.
Here's Ed's e-mail, [email protected]
Here’s Dave’s, [email protected]
And here’s the Foreign Secretary [email protected]
But this is the person who Dave and William listen to on the Cyprus Problem, David Lidington, and Minister at the Foreign Office responsible for UK’s relations with Cyprus. Below is what he said a the Keith Kyle Memorial Lecture in April this year.
“I’ll be listening carefully to what the people of Cyprus have to say to me and I will tell them what I have told you: that the UK strongly supports the UN’s efforts to achieve a settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as defined by the relevant Security Council resolutions. We are committed to a settlement by Cypriots for Cypriots, which will deliver a stable, prosperous and united island, operating as a valued partner within the EU. And we support that because we believe ultimately it is what the people of Cyprus want.” http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/news/latest-ne ... =589988582
Perhaps it’s time for the people of Cyprus Forum to tell Mr Lidington (in the politest possible way) what they want from a settlement.
Personally I have never understood why, as a community, 18% of the population should have political equality with the 80% majority. It’s not a safeguard; it has exactly the opposite consequence.
