How extraordinary, when apparently anyone owning a property (including if it is actully mortgaged) worth more than £200,000 - that is everyone in London then - will not be getting legal aid in future..
I do not understand the basis on which it gets granted or refused, but how can it be right that this very wealthy man, who has avoided arrest for years, is now to be helped by the taxpayer?

All Crown Court legal aid is means tested. This means that if Asil Nadir has assets he will be liable to pay all or part of the legal aid costs if convicted. Therefore the final bill will depend on whether or not he has assets or not.

It must be April fools day...nurses loose their jobs, police cuts and more and this individual(with his alledged millions) receives legal aid. I hope that that the Home Secretary can intervenve at the earliest opportunity.

Think you may need to put a bit more flesh on the bones of this story. Has Mr Nadir been granted full legal aid or aid subject to an assessment of his means?
The millions you say his defence will cost surely indicates little save that the lawywers involved will be grossly overpaid for their "learning".

I personally think this is very sad! If this gentleman is going to be entitled to legal aid after wasting tax payers money for not coming back to the UK back in the early 1990s when he was charged is clarly a insult to the legal system. Particularly when there are British soldiers coming back either dead or losing their limbs and only being compensated for around £100,000. What is going on?

I thought Legal Aid was for those who had few or no assets. If Nadal can afford to rent a pad in Mayfair then he can't be short of a bob or two. Yet another case of who you know I suppose. The majority of us can't get Legal Aid but if you have (hidden) money or are an illegal or assylum seeker the world is your Legal Aid oyster

Doesn't it make our legal aid look perverse that a millionaire gets legal aid when ordinary people get turned down. It reminds me of the Maxwell twins who got millions in legal aid. One rule for the rich and another for the rest of us?

That's OK... no problem!
We're bailing-out just about everybody else - why not him?
(I'll have nothing to do with discrimination).
