Grow your own superfoods

Postby londoner » Fri Jun 03, 2011 8:11 am

Superfood is the label given to a food which is considered especially nutritious or in some way of benefit to our health.

But I would be the first to admit that I have always been put off by such descriptions and the media attention superfoods attract. We have always thought that eating a balanced diet which includes lots of fruit and vegetables and which avoids too much sugar, salt and saturated fat is all we needed.

However, if you investigate these foods we would be silly to ignore the extra nutritional and health benefits they provide.

But what could be better than growing your own organic superfoods and eating them when they at their best or preserving them to enjoy later.

The following are 14 superfoods grow well in Cyprus and in Mediterranean area or you can consider adding them to your diet.

Hey Joe, do you have an knowledge of growing lime trees from seeds? Someone gave me some seeds and told me they should grow with no problems, but as I am brown thumbed, some advice would be useful.

Plant the seeds in individual peat pots filled with sterilized soil. Simply push the seeds into the soil until they are just covered.

Keep the peat pots in a dim room and water to keep the soil continually moist but not wet.

The seeds should germinate in about 6 weeks, move the growing lime trees to a room with plenty of sunshine after the first leaves appear.

Keep the seedlings in the peat pot when transplanting to a larger pot when the roots grow through the pot or when planting outside in the spring.

You will probably have to wait 5-6 years for it to get to a decent size and produce fruit.

If you don't want to wait that long - buy a 3 year old tree and plant in October.

Londoner, do you know how I can get those Lemon trees that make huge lemons without seeds? Our neighbor used to have such lemon tree and half of the tree was on our side and we had perfect lemons for many years ... until they cut the tree down :(

Hi Sotos

There are a few seedless lemons varieties. The Armstrong Seedless, Lisbon, Nepali Oblong, Santa Teresa and Eureka. I am not sure which one produces the largest lemons but I think it might be the Eureka.

Have a word with your local garden centre they are usually full of information.

I don't know of any local garden centers :) I live in an apartment now so I am totally clueless about such things! Those that I am talking about have a quite thick skin. I hate lemons with a lot of seeds! Why don't they only produce the seedless ones since there are so many variates?
