Alcoholic drinks which are being blamed for killing three Russian tourists and poisoning dozens of others in T***y could have been produced or distributed from northern Cyprus.
According to reports in the T****sh media, urgent investigations are underway to discover if the lethal drinks, which included vodka and gin branded “Eagle-Blow” and rakı branded “Raki 7” were also distributed to other areas of T***y.
The T****sh Ministry of Agriculture said 21 of a group of around 60 Russian tourists in the T****sh Aegean resort of Bodrum were reported to have been hospitalized over the weekend with symptoms of severe alcohol poisoning after taking a boating tour.
The cause of the poisoning is believed to be whiskey mixed with methanol.
Methanol, also known as wood alcohol, can be used for fuel and is an ingredient in formaldehyde as well as plastics and paints. Drinking high doses of it can cause dizziness, breathing difficulties and even blindness.
Three of the tourists have died since the weekend. One woman, Maria Shalyapina, 28, died on Monday as doctors were unable to stabilize her condition, while another, Aigul Zalayeva, 20, died on Tuesday in a hospital in Antalya.
The third victim was Marina Shevelyova, 22. Five other tourists are still receiving treatment in hospitals in Antalya and two are reportedly in critical condition.
The daily Zaman newspaper says that a company that imported the drinks from northern Cyprus reportedly distributed the drinks to many other provinces.
