UK wall sockets in Cyprus

Postby Sotos » Mon May 30, 2011 2:04 pm

In Cyprus we have the UK type of wall sockets but almost everything sold has the European plug on it. If you are lucky they will give you an adapter with it, which sucks anyway. I think Cyprus should change and adopt the standard European kind of plugs. I think the UK should do the same ... but probably their ego will not let them! There is no point in having different kind of plugs within EU! This only creates problems!

The shops have to supply an appropriate plug with any electrical thing they sell, Burke's Law! Where did that come from, I meant EU Law!

Uk electrical standards with the fused 3 pin plug apparently offer some safety advantages over the continental style of unfused plug.

Still, the advantages of using a single socket for the whole EU would outweigh any negatives. But especially in Cyprus whats the point of having UK wall sockets when 90% of what is sold here comes with continental plug?!!

So you would rather everyone changed all their wall sockets instead of getting an adapter for each appliance?

I suppose it would cut down on unemployed electricians for a few months, and provide good business for the hardware suppliers!

My God, you have hit on a way to get Cyprus out of the economic crisis, you are a genius!!!

If you have an existing house then you can continue using the adapters. But why should new homes continue the same way? Why should I build my house with UK kind of sockets when almost everything sold here comes with a European plug??

You should consider the technical/safety reasons Sotos…

The difference between a 3-pin plug and a 2-pin plug is that the latter has no grounding (earth connection), so every appliance you purchase and use with a 2-pin MUST be double insulated. This would exclude myriads of Chinese products we purchase here in Cyprus!

Anyway, double insulated devices are FATAL when wet because current on the casing (in the event of a fault) cannot escape via an earth pin to the ground and trip a fuse or CB to kill it, so expect many more electrocution deaths in countries that use them!

The 3-pins are much safer!

They are safer until you have people trying to force 2 pin plugs into 3-pin sockets. When most of the devices in the market are 2 pin any advantages from the 3-pin sockets are negated!!
