if i were in you i will avoid bulgaria and romania....dirty roads believe me
You could take a ferryboat from Greece to south italy and drive through appennini montains until north. From Milano or Geneva the Costa Azzurra ( monaco, montecarlo.. ) are faster to reach.

The distances are great and you get really, really tired and filthy!

Obviously I was planning to make stops and stay in a hotel at night ;) Maybe stay more than 1 night in some places. I was not planning to drive for more than 6 hours each day.

 6 hours??? I’d die after 6 hours! :?

After the first 200-300 miles you no longer want to look out the window even though it’s “new” country… you just wanna puke and go home! Image

How sad mate....

I hope you enjoy your holiday to Paphos this year. Plenty of rest spots along the way.

I once drove for almost 12 hours with just one stop at McDonald's. It wasn't THAT bad! Then again maybe you are right and I should do a more relaxing holidays. Like 3-4 days in a luxury exclusive villa with its own private beach :D I hear Sardinia has many such places!

Have you been to bulgaria and romania recently? I assumed the major inter city roads would be more or less like ours. no?

I've been in romania only 3 times mate ( with a romanian friend).
Dirty roads except Bucarest area, plus consider risk due to rom...gipsy...they can stop your car and steal you everything, underwear included. Its a poor country, don't forget it.

I once drove from South Carolina to New York, and back. Then I promised myself I wouldn't do anything similar in the future.

I drove for 4 days once, non stop from Darwin down to Perth....

Got stuck between the Ord River and some overflowing Creek for about 5 days with no town in between the 2 crossings.

Bathed in the Ord River with Fresh Water crocs in the vicinity, fished for food. Had plenty of water....

Length of trip = 9 days

No fair dinkum.

I was stuck between a Creek and the Ord River during torrential monsoonal rains for about 5 days.

Couldn't cross, and I was driving a Toyota Landcruiser GLX with snorkel.

I was eating Barramundi and getting my water from the River which I had to boil.

Do you have good maps ? Do you know the areas to travel ? Consider also that people can not speak proper English in these countries. And what happens If you get lost ?
