Israel Foreign Minister Floats Punishment for Turkey

Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Friday his country should punish Turkey for its recent behavior by supporting Kurdish militants at war with the Turkish state, as confrontation between the two former allies continued to escalate.

In international law there is the concept of the "contiguous zone" that is the international waters touching territorial waters. In the case of a threat, or reasonably perceived threat, approaching territorial waters, then the coastal state may extend its power to the contiguous zone. This is a doctrine much used by the Americans since 9/11, they interpret the contiguous zone to reach out to 100 miles from the US. They will have no problem accepting that Israel, inorder to prevent terrorism in Ghaza, has reasonable cause to stop and search Ghaza bound shipping.

In which case, Davut says, the three Turkish frigates will intervene to safeguard the freedom of the seas. Three frigates within missile range from Israeli shore launchers, and within easy air strike distance. Someone is playing games with the media at a time when Erdo is touring Arab states trying to convince them that neo ottomanism is good for them, but being a bazaarist he is accompanied by a whole bunch of salesmen trying to flog second rate turkish goods and services.

Ah, and a few minutes ago it came over the news services that he will not be visiting Ghaza. So much for bravado, getting arrested is too big a risk.
