Britain launches review of Cyprus military bases

Britain will review its military bases in Cyprus as it seeks to extract maximum value from a shrinking defence budget, Defence Secretary Liam Fox said in a statement to parliament on Tuesday.

What is the chance that Britain withdraws from one of the bases and if so which one? If it is the Dhekelia base, what happens to the Ayios Nikolaos village? Also, what maximum value is the UK seeking in return?

Discuss....

They will keep the WSBA if anything, for the aerodrome facilities at Akrotiri. They may also hang on to the ESBA in name but simply shut most of the facilities/sell off land or property..

I think it is time for our government to raise the issue of the bases.

I agree .... I also believe as one of the guarantors Britian ought to hand both back to the republic. Not only as a right thing to do but also as a respect for another EU sister State.

Britain Says Will Not Abandon Bases in Cyprus
2011-05-26 03:51:22

Britain said on Wednesday that the review of its military bases in Cyprus does not involve entirely abandoning them.

In remarks to mostly correspondents of Cypriot media, made public in Nicosia, a spokeswoman for the British Defence Ministry said the bases in Cyprus are very important for Britain from a strategic point of view. "Issues which will be reviewed are what we have now there, how do we use it, can we use it in a better way and with less spending, are changes needed and if yes which these changes should be," the spokeswoman was quoted as saying.
