Is Ryan Giggs CTB ?????? .. and The First Amendment

Postby bill cobbett » Sun May 22, 2011 6:11 pm

Some will know of "super-injunctions" being used here in GB by the well-known to protect their privacy and identity in some situations.

Been a lot of controversy about these being issued by the Courts, with the GB press banned from not only revealing the identities and actions of those concerned but also being denied the right to publish news that these injunctions even exist.

Much to my surprise, have just seen on Twitter that the Man Utd footballer Ryan Giggs is claimed by posters there to be the identity of the party known as CTB, in whose favour the GB High Court issued one of these super injunctions, and also read that the Twitter posts go on to claim was involved in an extra-marital affair.

Twitter is based in the USA by the way, and like CF, has its servers there, and Americans take their First Amendment Rights (freedom of speech, free press etc) very seriously.

Yes, he was named by a paper north of the border.

No not "trnc", but Scotland by the Scottish Herald.

Yes, thanks for that Ed, did hear the same, and have had the same experience as you.

May be of interest that the Right to Privacy come from the ECHR as Article 8 of the Convention,... whilst Free Expression is covered by Article 10 (think? or is it 11?)... whichever it is, a def conflict.

Super injunctions taken out in England don,t apply in Scotland who can with just the minimal of censorship (band over the eyes) imply who the person is.

Celeb dominated media IMO is a very strange and quite boring, they are paid far to much to do what they do.

As for super injunctions there would'nt be a need if people lost interest in celebs private lives and couldn't care less what they do except for what they are paid for  Media should stop printing and showing it, people should stop buying into it, that is the only reason we now have super injunctions.

Of course the people we vote into power should never escape our intense interest and their indiscretions are something that should never be gagged. They do run our lives to some extent.

I am not bothered in the slightest nor surprised as it's normal for famous men that yet another is exposed  It's a privacy pantomime.

But apart from his family who the hell cares!

Giggs' lawyers either forgot to apply for an interdict in Scotland or knew full well they would never be granted one. English law has no jurisdiction north of the border.

Name 'em and shame 'em. :)
