Teachers helped students cheat on exam, Turkish probe saysFriday, May 20, 2011
ISTANBUL - Daily News
More than 10,000 students cheated during open learning exams held in January thanks partly to the alleged involvement of teachers, a recent investigation by the Education Ministry has revealed.
The investigation uncovered alleged cheating in 669 classrooms in 42 provinces, including Istanbul, Ankara, Ağrı, Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, Bartın, Şanlıurfa, Siirt, Diyarbakır and Bitlis, ntvmsnbc reported Friday.
According to a Habertürk report, camera footage showed one teacher in a southeastern province allegedly announcing the correct key to the exam to students in a classroom. “I have to run to the other classroom [to give the key to other students]; be careful, there are inspectors in the school,” the teacher allegedly said.
Some people questioned as part of cheating allegations said in testimony that they were threatened by powerful people and told not to collect the cell phones of students and to give correct answers to their pupils.
According to the report, 10,704 students participated in the cheating while 1,338 teachers were accused of providing the correct answers for the exam. The students were barred from sitting the exam again for one year as punishment.
The open university and open vocational high school exams were held on Jan. 15 and 16 throughout the country.
