This is from another thread but there is considerable overlap here enough o confuse a moralist like piratis.
Furthermore, I wouldn't call Australia a diplomatic minnow. It is a country you would want to have on your side, because it has incredible influence in the UN, US, NATO, and EU.
In fact, Australia plays a far greater role in Cyprus than Germany does.
This is what Paphitis said the other day in order to emphasise the importance of his adopted country. Incredible influence with NATO, he says. Perhaps Australia can help us to become members of the PfP programme. The whole of Cyprus is yearning for this door to open for us. Can Australia do something about this?
Since time eternal, the US has interfered with our affairs, can Australia whisper something in the ears of Obama to leave us along.
And the EU. What a joke! Australia has incredible influence in the EU, Paphitis wants us to believe. We are members of the EU and yet we need Australia to say a kind word about Cyprus to the EU! This is amazing and it gets better. Our NATOphobic and extreme Eurosceptic President, needs the services of our Australian friends (so tells us Paphitis) in order to ................................................................................... (Paphitis, please fill in, so that we can understand the point you are making).
Australia is a major industrialized nation Bananiot, with big industry, and a major Energy and resources exporter. Yes, it has massive influence with the major EU nations such as UK, France, Italy, and Germany amongst others.
It also has massive influence in Israel, a major ally, and Turkey.
Yes, if Australia were to say nice words about Cyprus to the UK or Germany, or even the UN security council, they will listen.
If Australia were to stand up at a NATO summit(Australia attends these summits as an important associate member) and demand that Cyprus becomes a member, then this will place Turkey on the spot.
Australia has far more pull than Turkey, and this also applies to the PfP.
If Christofias asks Australia's PM to raise Cyprus at NATO summits because it will like to join, then Australia will probably do it no matter what Turkey has to say, and they will even bring this matter up within the US administration, and Defence circles within the Pentagon through Australia's Defence representatives. They will listen because Australia is an important ally, far more important Turkey and far more trusted.
And one more thing, Australia's nice words are a given. There is no reason for Australia to give Cyprus a hard time. The 2 countries have been friends for a long time, and Christofias has not returned empty handed either. He has obtained some goodies for Cyprus, in that there will probably be Australian fire fighters in Cyprus the next time there are big fires.
That's what Australia does for its friends. Perhaps Germany can do the same as well!
