Cyprus - President Christofias and the South Australian Premier attended an event at the Cypriot community building in Adelaide
“The objective of my candidacy and presidency is the reunification of the country, the termination of the unacceptable occupation which violates international law, the principles of the UN Charter and every sense of justice and lawfulness”, the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias said addressing yesterday an audience of Cypriots and Greeks of Australia in Adelaide where he and the Prime Minister of South Australia Mr Mike Rann laid the foundation stone for the new hall of the building of the Cypriot Community of South Australia.
President Christofias praised the Cypriots and Greeks of Adelaide for being active citizens and involved in the political and social life of their community, noting that the construction of the new hall was made possible due to the assistance of the South Australian Premier and his Government.
The President thanked Prime Minister Rann for being a firm supporter of the Cypriot struggle. He further said the wall of Nicosia would fall sooner or later, adding that “as long as we have friends like the Australian people and particularly brothers like Mike Rann, I am sure that we will tear down the wall, reunify the country and our people”. At the same time, Mr Christofias noted that as time went by things became harder and harder since Turkey, “consistently enforcing a specific plan, is creating new faits accomplis that render more difficult the implementation of the human rights of the Cyprus people and of refugees in particular”.
“Our Turkish Cypriot compatriots are not our enemies, they are our brothers and I have been blamed for saying that. They are Cypriots like us and that is why they are protesting today against the presence of thousands of settlers from Turkey, who are brought in to change the demographic composition of the Cypriot population”, President Christofias asserted.
He also expressed the gratitude of the people of Cyprus for Australia’s stance in favor of their struggle for the solution of the Cyprus problem.
For his part, Mr Rann, speaking at the event referred to the previous visit of President Christofias in his capacity as President of the House of Representatives, and noted that now he is being welcomed as Head of State and Representative of all the Cypriot people, Leader of the only legal government of Cyprus, as recognised by South Australia, Australia and the United Nations.
Referring to the relations between the two countries, Mr Rann said that despite the geographic distance between them the two countries are bound by close bonds which were cultivated by the former Premier Don Dunstan, adding that he is proud that he continues his commitment to cause of Cyprus. He noted that his commitment was formed from the experience he gained from his visit to Cyprus and his contacts with Cypriots.
He noted that his willingness to speak out for the cause of Cyprus, nationally and internationally has been criticised by Turkey and the illegal regime. He said however that he considers these attacks as an honour because he will continue to provide strong and practical support in the pursuit of a reunited federal Cyprus, with full restoration of the human rights of all the refugees. As Mr Rann noted he never talked against the Turkish Cypriots or the Turkish people.
He further said that the Government of the South Australia has supported the cases of Cypriots of South Australia at the European Court of Human Rights and noted that his government is the only Government outside Cyprus that has supported the Greek Cypriot refugees. He also underlined the contribution of the Cypriots Australians to their country of residence.
Mr Rann praised President Christofias for his courage, patriotism and his love of justice, stressing that the President’s ability to engage the former leader of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in the negotiations has yielded good results and hope for the achievement of an agreement. He added, however, that the change in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community has blocked a number of chapters on which substantial progress had been achieved. He poited out that President Christofias’ dedication to the solution of the Cyprus problem has resulted in the continuous briefing and involvement of the international community and referred characteristically to the visits of the Russian President and the German Chancellor to Cyprus.
The South Australian Premier said that he has followed with interest the recent demonstrations by the Turkish Cypriots, which show that they are tired with their leadership that has demands that are unrealistic and outside the framework of the UN resolutions. The Turkish Cypriots resent the occupation and the colonisation and are trying to keep their identity he said, adding that President Christofias is showing them the way.
Mr Rann also said that he was encouraged by the establishment of the “Home for Cooperation” at Ledra Palace, noting that this venture will encourage all Cypriots to gain experiences through cooperation via the existing dividing line. It will be a tool of mutual understanding and a new start, he said.
Concluding, Mr Rann said that is aware of President Christofias’ vision for the future of Cyprus as a country of peaceful co-existence, common prosperity and creativity of all Cypriots, adding that Australia applauds his commitment and supports his vision.
