Leaders to meet UN Secretary-General on 4 July

Postby halil » Sat May 14, 2011 9:07 am

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will meet the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities on 4 July in Geneva, it was announced yesterday.

Speaking after his regular meeting with Dervis Eroglu, Christofias said he had proposed that he and Eroglu meet before then. He also said he intended to call for a National Council or party leaders’ meeting beforehand.

Referring to a recent statement by the UN S-G that both sides needed to negotiate a solution to the Cyprus problem “with a sense of give and take, and compromise”, Christofias said: “I have asked for us to start discussions on the tripartite meeting and its content, including the various whispers on ‘give and take’ and I want us to explain to each other what we perceive as being ‘give and take’”, he said. “Negotiations without give and take are not negotiations; but give and take on what matters? This is what we need to clarify.”

The Greek Cypriot side, he added, has made it very clear that an international conference on the Cyprus problem could only ever materialise “in the event that we are very close to an agreement on all matters, including internal aspects”.

During yesterday’s meeting, the two community leaders also discussed matters of internal security.

Speaking afterwards, the UN special adviser in Cyprus, Alexander Downer, said the discussion was carried out “in a very constructive environment”.

“They continued, as they both agreed, in a positive manner on discussions on police matters,” said Downer. “The leaders also had quite a long discussion about the upcoming meeting with the Secretary-General, and both sides agreed to exchange opinions with each other on the issue of the meeting with the Secretary-General with a view to making that meeting a really successful meeting.”

The two leaders will meet again on June 1.

The UN wants the two sides to adopt a game plan to resolve outstanding issues in peace talks this year and is hoping for a deal by mid 2012, UN envoy Alexander Downer told Reuters in an interview .

"We don't have a deadline as such, but obviously everybody is working to try to get the agreement done before Cyprus takes over the presidency of the EU," said Downer. That position had been adopted by a number of EU leaders and Christofias, he said.

Referring to the tripartite meeting on July 4, Downer said: "We will want this meeting to be a meeting that really helps to drive the process forward towards the end of the year, for the rest of the year. We want it to be a bit more than a routine stock taking."

Downer said he had been discussing ideas for what he described as an "action plan" with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders before meeting Ban.

"I think they are quite responsive to those ideas...our ideal would be for the two leaders to go to the meeting with an agreed approach," Downer said. "I'm hoping for an action plan to be agreed."

He added: "They obviously haven't agreed on everything so the question is how we are going to encourage them to agree on all of the outstanding issues from now on."

Cyprus assumes the EU presidency in June 2012 and holds its own domestic presidential elections in February 2013. It is unclear whether Christofias will seek re-election.

Downer added that if the two sidess don’t manage to do it by the time Cyprus takes over the EU presidency then it's hard to believe how they will make any great strides forward during Cyprus's presidency or the presidential elections.

"It stands to reason that it would be for the best to try to get everything signed and sealed - not delivered - but signed and sealed before then”, he said.

...........So UN wants dead by mid 2012...........So what will happen if it doesn't ? Do UN has any answer for US to say ? !!!!!

That's how EOKA-B and it's masters were highly excited and hopeful about them... but in the end, a huge disappointment and the well known Cyprus tragedy were what all they led us to face... but this time will be worse than ever...

The UN have no answer because they can't use force to make Turkey abide to their OWN resolutions.
The KEY for the solution is at Ankara, the negotiations ARE NOT on equal basis, therefore nobody can accuse the Kypreos for no solution. So halil be prepared for the next stage of Turkeys crimes in Cyprus while she will be replacing you with settlers.
What;s the current ratio? 5 settlers:2 Kibrislis?
Next it will be 10:1
