Let's dump the divisive phrases of the divide and rule Former Colonial Power and let's also stop playing in to the hands of the Partitionists.

Not that it bothers moi personally cos fortunately am a sort of Englishman.

First thing is for both communities to make an effort to remove the Greek and Turkish flags from general use, then only observe Cypriot holidays, and just have one official language (probably English). Then people might start thinking themselves as Cypriot...

We always thought ourselves as Cypriots. And English is a foreign language.

Greeks regard Turkish as a foreign language (and vice versa).

And English is a foreign language for all Cypriots.

Well, there's always Esperanto... :D

I didn't say Yiddish! Oy Vey!
Seriously, I only mentioned Esperanto as it is an artificial language made up of words from a number of European languages.

P.S., I'm not Jewish.

I got the info about Esperanto from Harry Harrison, the author of the STAINLESS STEEL RAT novels.

In 1911 (or somewhere around there) when they decided that the schools for the two main communities on the island would teach in their own languages (Greek and Turkish), they should have taken the fascist route and made all the schools teach in English (it would have made things a lot easier for me!).

It would have meant the loss of our very rich Cypriot (Cyprus?) language, but I do think it would have narrowed the divide.

Cypriot.

I want to keep the word Cypriot plus something else that will vaguely indicate the language and or origin of each.

Any suggestions?

Cypriot. End of.

Hold on reh ZoC do you think is possible to totally remove the implied distinction from the words GCs /TCs and just make it "Cypriots".
How many pages of meaningful history could we ever write like that?

oh shit. history. thought we were looking forward.

ok, depends on who's writing it but i could do dozens of pages no problem... of course difficulties from the ottoman rule onwards might present themselves, with the large muslim influx/'conversions' - who've made a point of differentiating themselves from the mainstream ever since....

hands up. u stumped me.

cypriots with ottoman ancestry? cypriots of muslim extraction? dunno. we'd better ask them.... just as long as cypriots come first...
