cyprus vs cypriot

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Filitsa » Mon May 09, 2011 8:55 pm

"Cyprus" is a proper noun.

"Cypriot" is a proper adjective.

"Cyprus Forum," a compund noun comprised of two nouns juxtaposed, denotes that the subject of dicussion in the forum is Cyprus.

"Cypriot Forum," an errant attempt at a compound noun, is comprised of a proper adjective (Cypriot) describing a noun (forum). The purpose of compounding the two words is to give the forum a proper name, thus the capital F. However, "Cypriot" describes "forum" denoting that the characteristics of the forum are Cypriot. Can a forum be described as Cypriot?

The forum is correctly named.

Zoc, I think it's about time Cyprus acknowledges her responsibility for her negligence in promoting herself - goods, services, politics, and culture included. She has been too long dedicated to the "slave to imperialists" defense to the extent that she plays her own part in fulfilling the prophecy.

"Unexpected direction." Slick. Think of it as akin to a mother, in her infinite love for her child, gently nudging him to stand up on his own two feet. :)

Oh, Zoc, I really didn't want to bore you with my grammatical interpretation, but you asked for it.

If one understands that "Cypriot" is undeniably an adjective, then
there can be only two correct interpretations of the meaning of "Cypriot Forum:"

1. The adjective "Cypriot" describes the forum as being Cypriot,
which begs the question, "Can an internet forum be described as
Cypriot, and if so, what makes an internet forum Cypriot?" The
pebbles in the glass bowl on my desk can be described as Cypriot
because I collected them from a beach in Cyprus.

2. The adjective "Cypriot" describes those people who participate
in the forum in the same way as does "forum of Cypriots,"
wherein "of Cypriots" is an adjective phrase (actually, in this
case, "Cypriots Forum" would be the correct
terminology). Further "Cypriot Forum" is inaccurate because many
non-Cypriots participate in the forum.

You do realize that if we resolve this issue, then we are well on our way to resolving the Cypriot identity crisis.

fine. let's play.

that it is for discussing cypriot issues. (like a british forum would be for discussing british issues, not just 'britain' - ie. the land mass itself, its geography/topology/climate, which is what the term 'britain forum' suggests).

Filitsa wrote:The

then they are cypriot pebbles... and a cypriot forum is a forum for discussing cypriot issues, including the physical island itself, (geography/topology/beaches/pebbles) but also its politics, culture, humour, cuisine, economy, nightlife, etc. and its people (who may or may not reside on cyprus). u could argue that "cyprus forum" excludes people who aren't physically on the island.

Filitsa wrote: 2. The adjective "Cypriot" describes those people who participate

no, because the adjective "cypriot" relates not only to the island's people but all things from cyprus.... ie. all things cypriot; the wine, food, sport etc. as well as the people.

Filitsa wrote: wherein "of Cypriots" is an adjective phrase (actually, in this

not when the term "cypriot" means "of cyprus" generally (ie. not exclusively its people). why should it?
