no not "shame on u", my dear filitsa. "shame", as in "it's a pity". if u paid more attention to wot i say we might get somewhere.

Filitsa wrote:Your "cogent points" aren't so cogent, considering that you're only playing with me ... Shame that you prefaced them with such a thought. Further, an intelligent individual such as yourself should recognize that I indeed addressed your points.

not all of them. and, i don't wish to be picky but the thought was more an addendum than a preface.

Filitsa wrote: Perhaps it 's the paragraph format that I employ - as opposed to the point-by-point approach you require - that unsettles you?

i neither require this approach, nor does its absence unsettle me.

Filitsa wrote:Nevertheless, you might want to consider the fact that a noun can serve to modify another noun , as in my previous examples "internet account," "bank account," and "credit account." The same applies to "Cyprus Museum," "Cyprus Embassy," "Cyprus Football Association," and "Cyprus Olympic Team." Whether Cyprus versus Cypriot is used is a matter of style.

now we're arguing proper... a noun can and does serve this function when no adjectival equivalent exists to do so. but if an adjectival equivalent does exist the noun rarely does serve this function.

otherwise....
"switzerland roll" could be used for "swiss roll" but it never is.
"denmark pastry" could be used for "danish pastry" but it never is.
"spain harlem" could be used for "spanish harlem" but it never is.
"cornwall pasty" could be used for "cornish pasty" but it never is.
"china burn" could be used for "chinese burn" but it never is.
"france knickers" could be used for "french knickers" but it never is.

etcetera. etcetera. etcetera...

however, this 'noun-rather-than-perfectly-good-adjective' preference for all things cypriot seems to be unique to cyprus*; and i've explained why; and the fact we cyprus people (actually not i) don't have a problem with it and think it's merely a question of style is testimony to how good a job the cultural imperialists have done on us (actually not me).

* although i'm not discounting there may be one or two other places that have had a job done on them by imperialists.

me not objecting to it doesn't mean i agree it's an accurate name. but, of course, i do hope admin had a good night's sleep. ;)

by the way, thanks for taking me up on this with a half-decent argument, as we do need to highlight what fools the cyprus people have been taken for, over so many years, even post "independence".

Your quote, "and shame u chose to sidestep completely all the cogent points i made in my earlier post to u," is not a clear attempt at shaming me? Am I not the one you accused of allegedly sidestepping your "cogent" points? Who then is responsible for the shame?

Certainly did. Perhaps it is you who is not paying attention? And by the way, an "addendum" is added to the end of something. Said "thought" was not an addendum; in fact, it prefaced your response to me. Your post began with the words "fine. let's play."

I'm not convinced. Notice that I'm "playing" by your rules ... so that we may get somewhere.

I was not arguing in this instance but rather imparting knowledge.

(Cheeky. French toast or French fries didn't occur to you?) So it seems we are of the same understanding, but keep in mind the following:

Switzerland Cheese Association, not Swiss Cheese Association
Denmark Ball Association, not Danish Ball Association
Spain National Football Team, not Spanish National Football Team
Cornwall Council, not Cornish Council
China National Tourist Office, not Chinese National Tourist Office

"Actions speak louder than words," right, ZoC? Cliche but applicable.

Oh, but you do; otherwise, you would have justified an alternative by now.

"Cyprus" people fell victim to imperialist slave mentality because they could not combat it. At times, it's wiser to play the fool. However, the time that this rang true has passed. Cypriots need to redefine themselves.

christ u must have done some trawling to find the 'denmark ball association'... i'll give u that and ur best one, the cheese. very odd. swiss cheese sounds so much better. r u sure they're not taking the piss?

not the spain football, 'cos all national teams call themselves the name of the country: england team, scotland team, france team, usa team. the fans chant "england!" not "english!"...

cornwall council has to call itself thus 'cos it's an english county like all the others... yorkshire council, lancashire council etc. (the county has a distinct adjective - akin to english - 'cos it aspires to independence btw, in fact it may have been once) but needs to keep in line when it comes to naming its local authority.

china tourism... again, no, 'cos it's promoting tourism to the country, china. france tourism, hungary tourism works also....

 Haven't heard of the Denmark Ball Association? ... Had a similar discussion not too long ago (occupational hazard), and it came up ... go figure. Cornwall and China: trawling - guilty as charged. But you dissed my most profound remark. :(

Anyway, the playdate was fun. Thanks.

Ask ZoC. He prefers French knickers. Surely, he'll accommodate you. :D
