It looks like a new monument to folly is planned for the Limassol area - a 135m statue - the "Kind angel of the World"

If this is the same as the one proposed some months ago then the construction of this statue was rejected by the government.

It was featured on a news item on TV last night - I agree the statue is Rubbish - indeed to my mind the whole Idea of statue like this is crazy - if the government have rejected it? well Good for them. mind I read the organisation behind this idea was going to carve El Presidente Chris Toffee's name on one, somewhere.

The "KInd angel" statue idea appears to be still alive and now appears to have received some support from the the Church, who have apparently rented the "Philanthropists" a large area of land near the Sea at Agios Georgios Alimenos. THis is currently quite a pleasant rural area with a tradional beach-side Taverna.

The scheme is for the Statue,with a resturant in it, conference halls, cafes, etc. Which all sound to me like a commercial venture rather than something Philanthropic.

The one thing no one seems to have thought about is where all the delagates to the conferences will stay, so I expect at some stage a hotel will have to be shuffled into the plans - and no doubt a golf course!

That will be a great pity for the area.

Let's hope it never happens, at least not in this location.

I don't understand u really guys.. Is an unbeliavable miracle that take place in our country that will bring a lot of benefits in our country and especialy in our economy and u called it rubish..

IMHo this is a crass excuse to commercialy develop a large area of currently Green and pleasant land. I suspect that accomadation will be built but the Statue itself will never appear.

We already have over-capacity in both housing and hotels, and I suspect the true additional benefits will be small, except to the promotors of the scheme.

If they are truly philanthropic let them fund a hospital.
