seeing his eminence, our illustrious archbishop grigorios at the royal wedding on friday got me thinking about orthodox christianity...
the true name of the church is the 'one holy catholic and apostolic church'.
catholic, from the greek καθολικός, means universal. all adherents of the church profess the same beliefs regardless of race or nationality. most orthodox churches adopt a national title, generally serving to distinguish which language is followed by that particular congregation. eg russian in russia, greek in greece, cypriot in cyprus (some mistake, surely!)
the church is 'in communion' with the church of england, which broadly means that they have shared beliefs and that orthodox adherents can take holy communion in anglican churches and vice versa.
the church comprises inter alia 16 autocephalous churches, the five most senior being: 1) constantinople, 2) alexandria, 3) antioch, 4) jerusalem, 5) cyprus. thus the church of cyprus is the most senior orthodox church that still finds itself in an essentially christian country. (by way of comparison, the church of russia ranks 10th and that of greece 11th.)
what do we conclude from this?
the church is universal and transcends race, nationality and language. the religious needs of the church's adherents in the uk are in effect capable of being served by the church of england (assuming we can now mostly speak english).
cypriots in cyprus have their own autocephalous church which is older than and separate from that of greece. or am I being unorthodox?
