Our Turkish Cypriot secretary has advised converting only small amounts as most people will accept sterling, dollars or euros and give the change back in liras. She claims that the exchange rate offered by shopkeepers and restaurants is generally fair.
I also plan to use ATM's. They have branches of HSBC. At least one of the Turkish banks also has ATM's that take UK credit or debit cards.
