Greece withdrew Monday from the World Children's Games in Ankara due to Turkish Cyprus’ participation to the event, according to local officials.

"It is not possible to accept such an ill-minded and saddening behavior that makes children a tool of politics," Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek said in written statement.

The Greek team withdrew from the games on the first day of the First World Children's Games, which is being organized by the municipality and Directorate General of Youth and Sports to mark April 23, National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Turkey.

Gökçek said the organizers had rejected Greece's demand to exclude Turkish Cypriots from the games and defined Greece's behavior as a blow against world peace and friendship.

Children from 90 countries, including the United States, China, Azerbaijan and Armenia, are competing in 13 branches in the games.

Sorry VP, But the only children invited from Cyprus as a whole were from the TRNC,RoC children were NOT (as Ankara do not recognise the RoC).

VP!!!, The organisers failed to invite ANY children from The RoC, only those from the TRNC!,Why was that if not to use Children for Propaganda?

VP, I agree with alot of your postings, FFS I live here (Girne), but Ankara were wrong to only invite kids from the North, Children are innocents and should not be used as propagandist(sp) tools., Cant say that I blame Greece for withdrawing.
