In 2010, the Federal Minimum Wage was raised to $15 per hour or $569.90 per week
about 1850 Euros per month

This places Australia on top of the European scale

Probably true Pyro. But I challenge you to come to Australia and survive on 570 AUD.

The only people I know on this kind of money are very young casual workers.

Until recently I was getting by on $450 AUD a week, I'd be left with $300 after paying paying board. ATM studying full-time and working 30 hours a week I'm earning around $700 AUD, which although isn't much has made life a bit easier.

Was the 450 AUD cash in hand?

Australia isn't cheap Umit, and Melbourne is an expensive town these days. 700 for 30 hours is OK. Makes it 900+ on a full week.

Try and get into the mining industry is my advice. Year 10 school leavers driving a truck on 100,000+ pa.

How you doing anyway?

I wish it was 450 "cash in hand" . The mining industry is good for an Engineer, with a business degree I can't do much in that sector. I'm doing alright hopefully graduate in 5 months time, trying to figure out what sort of masters to do. The social benefits system in Australia is to complicated and flawed, a dole bludger receives more help from the system than a student trying to get by.

I'm doing alright, commuting between two part-time jobs and uni is starting to take its toll.

Yeh I agree.

The social security network is a bit wrong in my opinion. But the Government is now trying to introduce the Work for the Dole scheme which will sought the bludgers out.

Persevere with uni and do your masters after that, and you find it will all fall into place. Maybe even try and get into ADFA. I can give you some adice in that department if this interests you.

The Government will pay for all your tuition, and will set you up with a very rewarding job at the end of it, plus you will be paid to study. Engineers are highly sought after.

According to this, the minimum wage of Cyprus is between Greece and Spain.

It's not as if the cost of living is cheap in Cyprus.

http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/statis ... statistics

How the hell do you live on 850 Euros for heaven's sake? :?

Well like I said before people who are near minimum salary actually don't live. And there ARE A LOT.
Of course that's the minimum salary. The average could be double than that, but how is the average made is another question.
There is huge unbalance between the private sector and the public sector concerning salaries.

The incomes on the other hand is a totally different issue. Because here we have the incomes of businessmen and the incomes from the sales of land, in fact both the Kibrislis and the Kypreos got rich by selling land a few years ago.

I know some people who were working for near minimum salary, who just decided it doesn't worth it anymore, they sold all the land they had for a couple of millions TO FOREIGNERS and they just retired spending their time in cafes etc. The same was done at the occupied.

This is how was Cyprus during Papadopoulos

Selling property to retire is pretty selfish as well. It isn't viable since your are leaving nothing to your family.

Why not just buy more land, or diversify into stocks? You could supplement your income, but selling all property is not the right way to go.

I think there are obligations as a parent, especially if your children could be university graduates and then earn 850 Euros per month.

We could do that here as well, as many, even those on Minimum Wages can be very wealthy on paper.

The link here shows how EU countries stack up along various criteria (i.e. GDP per person, public debt as percentage of GDP, various growth measures, etc). Cyprus doesn't look so bad (if for no reason other than the fact that the one-legged man is king in a room full of quadriplegics).
