Average?

Have they compared to Germany, France, UK, Sweden, Finland, Austria et al?

I think Cypriots are very astute business people. The will avoid paying people their true worth if they can. It is only natural, I would do the same when running a business. That is why the Government needs to legislate a higher minimum wage inmho.

850 Euros is a disgrace.

And maybe they need to stop the influx of cheap labour from Romania, Bulgaria et al, because these people are suffocating younger Cypriots!

The next time you see him ask why his shopping center has turned into a ghost town!

He’s only got about 20-30% of his tenants left!

Well it actually ranks 12th out of 27. From the big 15 it beats Greece,Portugal and Spain and is just a little below Italy.

As for the minimum salaries look here:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_a ... _in_Europe

The minimum salaries in the EU are between 300 - 1200 euro per month.

So it seems that your suggestion to increase the minimum salaries to say 1500 Euros would perhaps be unrealistic?

Also paphitis look here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_wage_law#Australia
In 2010, the Federal Minimum Wage was raised to $15 per hour or $569.90 per week
about 1850 Euros per month

This places Australia on top of the European scale

According to this, the minimum wage of Cyprus is between Greece and Spain.

It's not as if the cost of living is cheap in Cyprus.

How the hell do you live on 850 Euros for heaven's sake? :?

Probably true Pyro. But I challenge you to come to Australia and survive on 570 AUD.

The only people I know on this kind of money are very young casual workers who have left school and work in retail, fast food, or are working in bar tendering and what not. A university graduate is different again.

Until recently I was getting by on $450 AUD a week, I'd be left with $300 after paying paying board. ATM studying full-time and working 30 hours a week I'm earning around $700 AUD, which although isn't much has made life a bit easier.

Was the 450 AUD cash in hand?

Australia isn't cheap Umit, and Melbourne is an expensive town these days. 700 for 30 hours is OK. Makes it 900+ on a full week.

Try and get into the mining industry is my advice. Year 10 school leavers driving a truck on 100,000+ pa.

How you doing anyway?

I wish it was 450 "cash in hand" . The mining industry is good for an Engineer, with a business degree I can't do much in that sector. I'm doing alright hopefully graduate in 5 months time, trying to figure out what sort of masters to do. The social benefits system in Australia is to complicated and flawed, a dole bludger receives more help from the system than a student trying to get by.

I'm doing alright, commuting between two part-time jobs and uni is starting to take its toll.

Well like I said before people who are near minimum salary actually don't live. And there ARE A LOT.
Of course that's the minimum salary. The average could be double than that, but how is the average made is another question.
There is huge unbalance between the private sector and the public sector concerning salaries.

The incomes on the other hand is a totally different issue. Because here we have the incomes of businessmen and the incomes from the sales of land, in fact both the Kibrislis and the Kypreos got rich by selling land a few years ago.

I know some people who were working for near minimum salary, who just decided it doesn't worth it anymore, they sold all the land they had for a couple of millions TO FOREIGNERS and they just retired spending their time in cafes etc. The same was done at the occupied.

This is how was Cyprus during Papadopoulos
