REACTION TO GC NATIONAL GUARD’S EMERGENCY RESPONSE FORCES

Postby halil » Sat Apr 23, 2011 11:28 pm

The Greek Cypriot National Guard’s preparations on the formation of emergency response forces on the border gained widespread reaction in the TC Side.
The Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias earlier said that they would be using this unit in case of need.

In his reaction,Derviş Eroğlu said “we aren’t working for a war, but towards lasting peace”.

“Will they go into a war with us, or with Turkey which has a population of 70 million? If that’s the case, the Greek
Cypriots can no way manage it” he went on saying.

Eroğlu said Christofias’ statements in relation to the emergency response forces may be part of a propaganda introduced for the upcoming elections in South Cyprus.

TRNC Presidential Spokesperson Osman Ertuğ also issued a written reaction on behalf of the Eroğlu.
Ertuğ said Christofias’ statement that newly purchased military tanks would be used against Turkey in case of need, was cautionary.

He said it was wrong to bring the possibility of a clash onto the agenda at a time the parties on the island maintained the peace negotiations.

“Such statements all serve to impose the psychology of war on the Greek Cypriot people, rather than reconciliation” Ertuğ went on saying.

The Spokesperson noted that the Greek Cypriot Leader’s statements fell against the UN Secretary-General BanKi-Moon’s call for peaceful and constructive messages towards a solution to the Cyprus problem; as they also proved the Greek Cypriot Side’s lack of will towards a settlement.

The TRNC Presidency has responded to the Greek Cypriot National Guard’s plans for an emergency response units along the borders. In a written statement, the TRNC Presidency said that statements issued by the Greek Cypriot military and political leaderships over military buildup and preparations for war along the borders has been received with astonishment and concern by the Turkish Side.
The statement said that it is hard to understand the reason behind bringing the possibility of armed conflict into the agenda under the guise of ‘dissuasiveness’ while continuing the negotiations process aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

‘Harsher statements were awaited to be made by the Greek Cypriot Leadership during election season but bring the possibility of war to the agenda contradicts with the Cyprus negotiations process which aims to find a peaceful compromise and overshadows the sincerity of the Greek Cypriot Side’ the statement said.
The Presidency also stressed that the Turkish Side will keep its cool head and will continue its constructive attitude at the negotiations table despite these kinds of developments.

In another reaction to the formation of emergency response forces of the Greek Cypriot National Guard, TRNC Prime Minister İrsen Küçük said reaching an agreement with the racists is no way possible.
He said the stance of the Greek Cypriot Side, which highlights readiness for war, is unacceptable.

“The only way for us to protect our righfulness is to protect our land” the Premier said, and called on the TC youth to protect the land.

“Only this can help a solution to take place” Küçük added.

TRNC Foreign Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün also issued a reaction against the developments and said that these are either part of the election propaganda in South Cyprus or signs that show the Greek Cypriot Side loosing its mind.

He emphasized that such stances seriously harm the negotiations process.

Özgürgün reminded of the Turkish Side’s continuous good will towards a solution to the Cyprus problem and said, he didn’t expect the European Union, which adopts a biased approach against the Turkish Side, to make the necessary warning to the Greek Cypriot Side.

“A solution is acceptable if it’s under the United Nations auspices. We are sitting at the negotiations table with good will and have no intention of leaving the table. But the Greek Cypriot Side’s sincerity towards reconciliation must be questioned” .

Love, peace, and bizarre war claims at Easter
http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/love- ... r/20110423

PRESIDENT DEMETRIS Christofias yesterday called for unity on the domestic front to tackle the challenges of the global financial crisis, and the Turkish invasion.

At the same time, the Church said Cyprus was in danger of being overrun by Turkey, while Turkish media was bizarrely reporting that Greek Cypriot National Guardsmen (NG) were ‘amassing along the border” and ‘getting ready for war”.

This was dismissed outright by Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou who said Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu had distorted comments by Christofias during a routine Easter visit to an army camp. The President had merely said that the NG was a useful deterrent in the absence of a solution. Christofias would be sending a letter to Eroglu over his “unhelpful” comments, the spokesman said.

In his Easter address to the people, Christofias sent love, peace, brotherhood and solidarity to the refugees, enclaved, relatives of the missing, unemployed, and all those facing difficulties living under the poverty line.

“Our thoughts are with all those who need the support, care and warmth of the state. We promise that we will continue to be by their side,” he said.

Christofias argued the economy was a national issue and should be treated as such, noting that in the past Cyprus got through the hard times through unity, consensus and contribution by all. He called for the same approach to today’s economic problems.

Regarding the island’s continued division, he said: “Unfortunately, this year’s Resurrection did not herald the good news of our beloved homeland’s salvation. Another Easter finds Cyprus divided and semi-occupied.”

Unity was key to liberating Cyprus and confronting Turkey’s efforts to upgrade the breakaway state and make division permanent. “We categorically reject partition,” he added.

Archbishop Chrysostomos was a bit more militant in his Easter message. He said the island ran the risk of being completely overrun by Turkey unless a more proactive approach is adopted with regard to the Cyprus problem.

“Painful and constant concessions on our part have not been acknowledged or reciprocated by Turkey,” he said. “The occupation forces are constantly shifting their goals, and today it is more than apparent what their final objective is. It is not a confederation, nor partition, nor a two-state solution, but rather the total Turkification of our island and the casting out of our people.”

He added: “The ghastly face of the occupation grows ever more heinous,” Chrysostomos observes, citing the recent arrests of clerics and MEPs by Turkish Cypriot authorities.

Likening the plight of Greek Cypriots to the Passions of the Christ, the top cleric notes: “We must not waver from the principles of the European Union and the United Nations. Only thus shall we be genuine children of the Resurrection.”

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Friday that Turkish and Turkish Cypriot media had distorted statements by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and that the President would be sending a letter to Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, who had commented on the distorted remarks.

Turkish and Turkish Cypriot media reported that President Christofias had said the Greek Cypriot side was ''ready for war,'' during a visit to an army camp.

''There has never been such as statement on behalf of the President of the Republic,'' Stephanou pointed out, noting that ''the President of the Republic will be sending a letter to Mr. Eroglu about this.''

In a written statement, Stephanou notes that President Christofias, in his remarks at the army camp, ''stressed a few times that we are working for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem and that the National Guard must be ready to be used only as a preventive force, if and when necessary.''

Stephanou points out that Eroglu made comments that ''damage the negotiating process and the political atmosphere that is necessary in efforts to reach a solution.''

''Leaders cannot respond to distorted and/or inexistent statements,'' he added, noting that Eroglu was causing unnecessary unrest, ''unless that is the aim.''

Eroglu is a fascist Turk and he has stated so. He is a Turk like the rest of them that is what he has said. He is not man of peace.

President Christofias has to make sure that his people are safe from a further Turkish invasion. Eroglu will concur with Erdogan n any matter because he is a Turk and wants to gift the occupied area of Cyprus which belongs to all Cypriots including some of those who speak Turkish.

Christofias has put forth proposals for a fair ad just solution. Eroglu always takes matters outside the parametters of the agreements reached thus far. Frankly I can't wait until you guys choose a better peaceful leader.

The president of Cyprus has proven time and time again that he has no soft spot for the national guard. The ineffective one foot in the grave minister he's placed to manage it, the reduction to near zero of any new spending on weaponry and the further reduction on maintenance has been the Akel line forever.

He was making his rounds to the army camps as all Presidents do in Easter and had said that the national guard is basically necessary to protect Cyprus from any further attacks from turkey.......from that the Turkish paranoia press have decided we're going to war.

There's an old saying in Cypriot, A pou en antrepete, o cosmos en dikos tou.

If you've got no shame you can lay claim to the whole world.

Absolutely... Pres X was paying tribute to the young men of the National Guard, who have given up two years of their lives for the DEFENCE of the Republic against further Turkish aggressions...

... and Erroglu and Turkey have run and run with this not unusual visit and spun it to show their usual lack of goodwill for the talks, to disrupt the talks with their war-mongering.

... and only a day or two ago, fishermen from Paralimni, going about their peaceful business out at sea well within the extension to sea of the cease-fire line, were shot at by the Turkish Army.
