Her great act of terror was to speak this sentence in Kurdish on taking the oath to the Turkish Anything But A Parliament...

"I take this oath for the brotherhood between the Turkish people and the Kurdish people."..

Sentenced to 10 years.

Amongst her achievements and awards...

She was recognized as a Prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.

In 1994 she was awarded the Rafto Prize

in 1995, was awarded the Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament.

In 2001 the European Court of Human Rights ruled against Turkey after a review of her trial, ruling Turkey had violated her rights of free expression.

She co-founded the Democratic Society Party in 2005.

In 2008, thrown in to prison again for daring to speak her mind, charged with "terrorism" (pollocks)... for saying in a speech..

"Kurds have three leaders, namely Massoud Barzani, Celal Talebanî and Abdullah Ocalan."[3] Massoud Barzani is the president of the Kurdistan federal region in Iraq, Celal Talabani is the ethnic Kurdish president of Iraq, and Abdullah Ocalan is the imprisoned Kurdish leader of PKK in Turkey ."

In 2008, Zana was sentenced to another 10 years in prison by the Turkish court. The court ruled that she had violated the Turkish penal code and the Turkish anti-terror law in nine different speeches.

In 2009 sentenced to further fifteen months for a speech she had made at the Uni of London.... a speech in London!!!!!!!!!!

In 2010 again sentenced to further 3 years.

... all this woman has done is to show the courage of her convictions, to express her views and to do so peacefully!!!!!!!!!!!!

and the Turks wonder why EU accession is so slow.....they rally have to grow-up and realise that imprisonment for speaking in a particular language is not a sign of well developed healthy democracy, but of an immature repressive state: a real pity for the Turkish people who deserve better.

From Human Rights Watch...

"...(London, April 18, 2011) - The prosecution of hundreds of officials, activists, and elected mayors from the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) highlights the problems associated with Turkey's overbroad antiterrorism laws, Human Rights Watch said today. The trial of the 152 defendants in Diyarbakir Heavy Penal Court for alleged links to the armed outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is set to resume on April 19, 2011.

The 152 defendants have been in prison for periods of up to two years, and include six democratically elected mayors from BDP,..."

..."The use of terrorism laws to prosecute sitting mayors and other BDP officials is both troubling and all too familiar. Without compelling evidence of violent activities, it’s hard to see the prosecution’s effort to link this legal party with an illegal organization as anything but a clampdown on legitimate political activity..."

Time yet for a four party conference?

Instead of Turkey demonizing the overwhelming majority of Cyprus, the Greek Cypriots, and the ethnic minority of Kurds in Turkey, as the only way to cover up her inconsistencies, fascism and pseudo-democracy, she should instead be brave enough to sit around a table with the Republic of Cyprus, her Kurdish community and the Turkish Cypriot community to share her ideas and principles about majority-minority relations in unitary states.

Turkey of course has a serious conflict of interest.
In two like situations she supports the majority's interests in one case and the minority's in the other, employing two entirely different sets of arguments. Always demonizing the opponent by use of her ultra powerful deep-state propaganda apparatus. Her use of appalling force in the case of Cyprus is meant to ostensibly protect a 12-15% Turkish Cypriot minority when in fact she violates the territorial integrity of a UN/EU state and the human rights of all the Cypriots since 1974, whereas in Turkey itself her appalling use of force is meant to suppress anything Kurdish, for 87 years unabated.

Turkey does not have the political cojones to attend such a conference because she knows her ultra hypocrisy will be unveiled. At such a conference the world will know beyond doubt that the majority of Cyprus, the Greek Cypriots, is light years ahead in her thinking vis-a-vis large ethnic minorities than the majority in Turkey, the ethnic Turks, the latter only just recently awaking to the reality that the Kurds are not Turks and that they want all their legitimate rights that every human being in the world deserves, i.e. social, economic and political rights unhindered by the state!

Such grand unveiling of Turkey's grand hypocrisy is the sheer beauty of the four-party conference idea!
