A FERRY service deal linking Cyprus to the rest of the Mediterranean is edging closer
with Greece expected to amend its shipping legislation in a move which will end the island’s isolation from the seas for travellers.Communications Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis told the House yesterday that a presidential decree from Greece should be issued by next week to allow for roll on roll off ferries to carry a maximum of 12 passengers at one go between Cyprus and Greece.
This would end Cyprus’ isolation - a fact highlighted last year when the Icelandic ash cloud grounded flights and stranded travellers.
It would also allow for a four-country ferry service deal between Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Israel.
Marcoullis was optimistic about the deal’s progress.
It “might result in a European Union support of up to 70 per cent of the functional expenses of a company which will initiate the service,” she said.
Internal problems in Greece had delayed changes to Greek legislation, Marcoullis said.
She added that the Christofias government has also been “processing the wider issue of a ferry connection for six /seven months now”.
A bit over a year ago, Marcoullis announced plans to reopen the passenger route from Limassol to Lavrion, Greece for car ferries. At the time, roll on Roll off ferries were mentioned as a temporary solution until a full car ferry service could be established.
Ferry services have been suspended since the 1990s.
